The City of Alachua describes itself as the place where I-75 meets US 441, and its economy has grown up around that junction. The two largest employers in its FY2024 financial report were the Walmart Distribution Center, with 915 workers, and the Dollar General Distribution Center, with 776, and most of the city’s distribution buildings sit in its southwest corner near the interstate. RDI Power has no location in Alachua. Our mobile technicians drive up from the Brooksville shop equipped to work on a truck in a yard, a drop lot or on the shoulder.
Freight volume at the Alachua interchange
FDOT’s 2025 inventory counts roughly 20,800 trucks a day on I-75 beside Alachua, 28.7% of all traffic there. US 441 adds about 2,080 more, and on SR 235 around 15% of vehicles are trucks. So a breakdown near Alachua could be a tractor bound for another state or a straight truck that pulled away from a local dock just before it quit.
Either way, location comes first when you call. On I-75, give the direction and the nearest exit or mile marker. On US 441 or SR 235, the closest cross street or business sign does the job. Mention whether the truck is on the shoulder, on a ramp or already off the road.
When the truck dies in an Alachua dock yard
A paved distribution yard is one of the better places to fix a truck outside a shop. There is room on every side, no passing traffic and space to park a service truck alongside. Yards also come with rules: gate check-in, speed limits, sometimes an escort. Before the technician arrives, tell us the facility, which gate to use and who will meet them, and settle the trailer question. Is it loaded or empty, still coupled or dropped? A coupled, loaded trailer changes what equipment comes along and where the tractor can be worked on.
Getting a tractor out of Alachua under its own power
The technician scans the truck, reads codes and live data, and tests before replacing anything. Heavy-duty software covers the Cummins, Detroit, Volvo and Caterpillar engines found in Freightliner, Peterbilt, Kenworth, Volvo, International and Mack tractors. Repairs that are often finished in the yard or on the shoulder:
- A no-start traced to discharged batteries, a corroded cable end, a poor ground or a failed starter
- Charging trouble from the alternator, the belt or its tensioner
- Air leaks at gladhands, lines and fittings, plus failed brake chambers
- Derates caused by a failed sensor, a chafed harness or a DEF system fault
- Plugged fuel filters, a full water separator and air in the lines after service
- Dead trailer lighting circuits and corroded connectors
Every repair is backed by a digital inspection report. Photos show what failed and what was replaced, and the technician’s notes cover anything else worth watching, which helps when the person approving the bill sits in a dispatch office far from the truck.
Waiting on the shoulder near Alachua
On I-75, with more than a quarter of the traffic made up of trucks, the shoulder is no place to stand. Get the truck as far right as it will go, set the hazards and the warning triangles, and wait well away from the travel lanes. Do not keep cranking an engine that refuses to start; it flattens the batteries and cooks the starter, and the technician needs both intact to find the real fault. Take a photo of the dash before shutting down, since some codes clear on restart, and note any fluid under the truck if you can look without stepping toward traffic.
Engine and transmission work beyond an Alachua yard visit
Some failures do not belong in a dock yard: internal engine damage, a transmission that will not shift, anything that needs the truck lifted. When the technician confirms one of those, we work out with you how and when the truck reaches Brooksville, and the shop picks up from the diagnosis rather than repeating it. Our truck transmission repair and rebuild page describes what happens once it arrives. Labor carries the same warranty in either place: 3 years or 36,000 miles, or 2 years or 24,000 miles on RDI Fleet repairs.
Reaching RDI Power from Alachua
Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM, anyone with a stopped diesel can call (352) 433-3800. After hours and on weekends, roadside coverage is a benefit of RDI Fleet accounts, available 24/7. We do not promise arrival times; you get a straight answer on when a technician can reach Alachua, based on where the truck is and what is already scheduled.
Operators with units that live at Alachua docks can move routine work into the yard on a schedule; see fleet maintenance in Alachua. For breakdowns in the city to the south, our Gainesville mobile diesel repair page covers its four I-75 exits, and the program as a whole is explained under mobile diesel repair.
