Polk County is where the Tampa and Orlando freight markets meet, and it adds its own heavy industry on top: phosphate mines in the Bone Valley, citrus groves and processing plants, and distribution buildings of 1 million square feet or more along I-4. RDI Power has no shop in Polk. Our technicians come out from Brooksville with the diagnostic tools and parts to repair trucks at yards, groves, plants and roadsides, and we plan bay work into Brooksville when a job calls for it.
I-4, US 27 and SR 60: Polk County’s truck roads
The Polk TPO, citing FDOT data, ranks I-4 near the Hillsborough County line first among Polk roads for trucks, at about 19,500 a day. The tolled Polk Parkway near SR 37 in south Lakeland comes second at 6,464, and SR 60 near US 27 at Lake Wales third at 6,440. FDOT calls US 27 a regional freight corridor between I-4 and Miami and expects truck traffic on it to grow with the CSX logistics center near Winter Haven.
Those numbers show up on the ground. In Davenport, residents reported heavy semi and box truck traffic at US 27 and Deen Still Road in 2024, where drivers detour around I-4, and county officials planned longer turn lanes there. Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise is studying a tolled corridor from US 27 to US 17/92 in Davenport with freight mobility among its stated needs. Eastbound I-4 has a rest area east of the SR 559 exit with 23 truck spaces. Distribution, phosphate and citrus: who runs diesel in Polk County
Distribution. Amazon Air has run its southeast regional cargo hub at Lakeland Linder International Airport since July 2020. Publix is headquartered in Lakeland with a distribution center and food plants in the city, and CSX’s Winston Yard just west of town is the railroad’s main classification yard for much of Central Florida. In Winter Haven, CSX’s Central Florida Intermodal Logistics Center opened in 2014 on a 318-acre terminal with capacity for up to 300,000 containers a year. Auburndale has Medline’s 830,000 square foot distribution center and a 386,000 square foot RealCold cold storage building, Davenport has a 2.2 million square foot Walmart e-commerce fulfillment center, and ALDI’s Haines City distribution center added a chilled wing in 2026. Fleet maintenance in Winter Haven and fleet maintenance in Auburndale cover that warehouse belt.
Phosphate. Mulberry’s chamber bills the town as the phosphate capital of the world. Mosaic runs the Nichols mine near Mulberry and lists a Fort Meade mine among its active Bone Valley operations, and CSX moves phosphate north from Mulberry Yard to Winston Yard. See mobile diesel repair in Mulberry for the mining district.
Agriculture and industry. Polk leads Florida in citrus production, ranks 4th in the state in head of cattle and has 600,000 acres in agriculture. Florida’s Natural, a grower cooperative, runs its processing plant in Lake Wales, and Nucor operates a rebar micro-mill on about 440 acres in Frostproof.
Public fleets. Polk County Public Schools moves about 50,000 students a day on more than 500 buses running 2,600 routes. Bartow, the county seat, is home to the School Board, county offices and FDOT’s District One headquarters. Fleet maintenance in Bartow covers that side of the county.
Field repairs from Lakeland to Frostproof
A Polk County visit can be a dock yard off County Line Road, a haul road at a plant, a grove lane outside Lake Wales or a shoulder on US 27. Wherever it is, the technician starts with a real diagnosis: dealer-level software on the truck, codes and live data read, the suspect circuit or part tested before anything is ordered. Common on-site fixes include charging and starting faults, air system leaks, brake chambers and slack adjusters, cooling system leaks, fuel filters and water in the fuel, and sensor or harness faults that cut power.
Mines, plants and distribution centers set their own rules for outside contractors, so we ask about those before the visit. Groves and pastures need firm ground for the service truck. When a truck needs an engine overhaul or a transmission rebuild, the technician explains what failed and we work out with you how and when it comes to Brooksville. Each job is documented on a digital inspection with photos, and RDI Power’s labor warranty of 3 years or 36,000 miles covers on-site work. More on how mobile service runs is on the mobile diesel repair page.
RDI Fleet plans for Polk County operators
An RDI Fleet plan is built around how your trucks earn. Tractors running I-4 between distribution centers rack up highway miles, so their PM follows the odometer. Trucks that spend the day at a pit or a plant build engine hours faster than miles, so theirs follows the hour meter. Grove and cattle trucks can be scheduled around the season so they are ready when the work peaks.
Fleet accounts get priority scheduling, 24/7 roadside help, annual DOT inspections done with PM and a 2-year/24,000-mile warranty on fleet repairs. Every finding is photographed and filed by unit, so you can plan repairs instead of reacting to them. The fleet maintenance page lays out the program.
If your trucks are based in Polk County, call with a rough unit list and a description of the work they do. We will tell you what fits on-site and what a plan would look like.
