The 6.6L Duramax has powered Chevrolet and GMC heavy duty pickups since 2001, through several generations with very different fuel systems and emissions hardware. RDI Power repairs every one of them at our Brooksville shop, plus the 3.0L Duramax in half-ton trucks and SUVs and the 2.8L in the Colorado and Canyon. Brian, our service advisor, spent 35 years as a technician at a Chevrolet dealership, so the person writing up your truck knows these engines from the service bay side.

Duramax by generation

Knowing which Duramax you have tells us a lot about where to look first. Your engine code is the 8th digit of the VIN on most GM trucks.

LB7 (2001 to 2004)

The first Duramax, with no EGR or DPF. Its known weakness is the injectors, which can crack or leak internally. Symptoms include an oil level that rises between changes, white smoke, rough idle and hard starts. The injectors sit under the valve covers, so replacement is a real job, and getting it right matters.

LLY (2004.5 to 2005)

The LLY added a variable geometry turbocharger and EGR to meet emissions rules. It is known for running hot when towing heavy in hot weather, which makes the condition of the cooling system especially important on this engine.

LBZ (2006 to 2007)

The LBZ paired with the Allison 6-speed and still had no DPF. It is well regarded, and the repairs we see on it now are mostly age and mileage related: cooling parts, fuel system wear, turbo and seals.

LMM (2007.5 to 2010)

The first Duramax with a diesel particulate filter. Trucks that make short trips or idle a lot struggle to complete regens, and that leads to clogged filters, power loss and EGR fouling. Our article on DPF and regen problems explains why.

LML and LGH (2011 to 2016)

The LML added SCR with DEF, which brought NOx sensors, DEF heaters and DEF dosers into the repair picture. It also uses the Bosch CP4.2 high-pressure pump, which can fail and send metal through the whole fuel system. The LGH is the version used in vans and some chassis cab trucks, with similar systems.

L5P (2017 on)

The L5P uses a Denso high-pressure pump in place of the CP4.2, and from 2020 it pairs with the Allison 10-speed. It is strong and generally dependable. The work we see is mostly emissions related: EGR, DPF, DEF and NOx sensor faults, along with routine maintenance.

3.0L and 2.8L Duramax

The 3.0L inline 6-cylinder Duramax runs in the Silverado 1500, Sierra 1500 and GM’s full-size SUVs. The 2.8L 4-cylinder runs in the Colorado and Canyon. Both carry full modern emissions systems, and both get the same diesel diagnosis as the 6.6L.

Common Duramax repairs

  • Fuel system: injectors, high-pressure pumps, fuel filter housings and air in the fuel. See diesel fuel injection and our article on why diesel injectors fail.
  • Injector harness wiring: chafed injector wiring on earlier engines causes open circuit codes and misfires that can look like a failed injector.
  • Glow plugs and the glow plug module: see glow plug repair.
  • Turbocharger: sticking vanes, actuator faults and boost leaks.
  • Emissions: EGR valves and coolers, DPF regen problems, DEF system faults and NOx sensors. See exhaust and emissions repair.
  • Cooling: radiators, water pumps, thermostats and hoses, especially on trucks that tow.
  • Allison transmission: fluid service, shift complaints and repairs on the 5-speed, 6-speed and 10-speed Allison automatics. See truck transmission repair.

Our article on Silverado repair and maintenance concerns covers more of what Duramax owners run into.

Signs your Duramax needs a look

  • An oil level that climbs between changes, which means fuel or coolant is getting into the crankcase
  • Coolant that keeps disappearing, or a temperature gauge that climbs when you tow
  • Regens coming closer together, a Reduced Engine Power message or DEF warnings
  • Long cranking, rough running when cold or white smoke at startup
  • A water in fuel light that comes back soon after the separator is drained

Each of these is easier and cheaper to fix early than after it strands the truck.

Duramax maintenance basics

Follow the oil life monitor and the schedule in your owner’s manual, and use the severe service intervals if you tow, haul heavy, idle a lot or drive short trips. Beyond oil, the items that matter most are the fuel filter and water separator, the engine air filter, coolant, Allison transmission fluid, and transfer case and differential fluids. Steering, suspension and brakes deserve a look at every oil change on a truck that works hard. When the water in fuel light comes on, drain the separator right away rather than waiting for the next service.

The truck around the engine

We repair the rest of your Silverado HD or Sierra HD as well: brakes, front suspension and steering, electrical systems, drivelines and the Allison transmission. See our Chevrolet diesel truck repair page for more on GM trucks.

Every Duramax repair comes with a digital vehicle inspection with photos and technician notes and our 3-year/36,000-mile labor warranty. If your Duramax is running wrong, call the shop or request service online, and tell us the year, the engine and what it is doing.

Questions we hear

Which Duramax engine is known for injector problems?
The LB7, built from 2001 to 2004. Its injectors are prone to cracking and leaking, which shows up as a rising oil level, white smoke, rough running and hard starts. We test injector return and contribution before replacing them.
Is the CP4 fuel pump a problem on my Duramax?
The LML, built from 2011 to 2016, uses the Bosch CP4.2 pump, and when one fails it can contaminate the entire fuel system. The L5P that followed uses a Denso pump. On any Duramax, clean fuel, a drained water separator and fuel filters on schedule are the best protection.
Does a Duramax have glow plugs?
Yes. Every 6.6L Duramax uses glow plugs and a glow plug control module for cold starts. Long cranking, a rough cold idle or white smoke at startup can point to a failed plug or module.
Do you work on Duramax engines in vans and medium duty trucks?
Yes. We repair the 6.6L Duramax in Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana vans, chassis cab trucks and the Silverado 4500HD, 5500HD and 6500HD medium duty trucks.
