Ozello is a string of keys on the Gulf between Crystal River and Homosassa, tied together by a winding county road. It is not a town or a Census place; the 1900 count found 49 residents, up from none in 1890, and there is no current official count. There is no RDI Power shop on the keys. The bays are at 1665 Donto Way in Brooksville, roughly 32 road miles and 52 minutes from the middle of Ozello, and when a truck should not make that trip, a mobile technician makes it instead.
The Ozello Trail and the keys
CR-494, the West Ozello Trail, runs west off US-19/98 and links the keys with a twisting road full of sharp curves. It is one of Citrus County’s best-known motorcycle rides, a scenic out-and-back run to the Gulf, and trailered boats share it with the riders. Around it is protected coast: Crystal River Preserve State Park follows 20 miles of shoreline from Crystal River through Ozello to Homosassa. Traffic on the trail is mostly residents, anglers and riders.
Towing a boat on the Ozello Trail’s curves
A road full of tight bends asks a lot of a loaded tow rig. Brakes on the truck and the trailer work on every curve, and a trailer with weak or unbalanced brakes pushes the truck where the driver does not want it to go. Steering parts, tie rod ends and ball joints carry side loads they never see on a straight highway, and tires wear on the shoulders. A truck that feels vague in the bends, pulls under braking or wears its front tires unevenly deserves a front-end and brake inspection before the next trip out the trail.
The drive home adds its own load. Pulling a boat from the Gulf end of the trail back to US-19/98 and beyond is sustained towing, and a marginal transmission or cooling system shows it with temperatures that creep upward. If your truck displays transmission temperature, watch it on the way out. A reading that climbs higher than it did last season is a reason to have the cooler, the fluid and the converter checked before it becomes a slipping transmission.
Salt marsh launching at Ozello Community Park
The free county ramp at Ozello Community Park launches onto St. Martins Marsh, with 1 lane and 28 parking spaces, including trailer parking. Each trip down that ramp dips the trailer’s hubs, brakes and lamps into salt water, and sometimes the back of the truck goes in with them. Salt drives corrosion into bearings, brake parts, wiring connectors and frame hardware, and the damage tends to appear as an intermittent fault rather than a clean failure. Rinsing the trailer and the underside of the truck after each trip slows it down; regular inspections catch the rest. Our trailer repair page covers bearings, brakes and wiring on the trailer side.
From the Ozello Trail to Donto Way
Leaving the keys, the trail meets US-19/98, which heads south to the Chassahowitzka junction; from there US-98 angles southeast into Brooksville and Cobb Road. A truck in good health covers it in under an hour. A truck running hot, slipping gears, pouring smoke or flashing an oil pressure warning should stay put while you phone (352) 433-3800, and together we will choose between a tow and a technician on the trail. Shop work begins with a diagnosis you can see and finishes with a photo inspection, and an Ozello repair carries our 3-year / 36,000-mile labor warranty. Engine, fuel, cooling and emissions work are all described under diesel service and repair.
