South Brooksville is the part of Hernando County that hugs the county seat without being inside it. The Census counts it as a place of its own, 4,311 people in 2020, spread around the southwest, south and southeast sides of the city, yet every address here still carries a Brooksville mailing name. RDI Power repairs diesel trucks for that whole ring from a single shop on Donto Way, and we send mobile technicians to the trucks that should stay where they are.
How South Brooksville is laid out
More than half of South Brooksville, 55.3 percent of residents in the 2020 count, lived in areas the Census classes as rural. That is a far more country mix than the city next door. Spring Hill borders the CDP on the south and west, Wiscon sits on its west side, and its addresses divide almost evenly between ZIP 34601 and ZIP 34604.
2 highways carry most of the traffic. US-41, known here as Broad Street, runs through the middle of the CDP and continues 6 miles south to Masaryktown. Cortez Boulevard (SR-50) crosses the northern portion, reaching Ridge Manor 14 miles to the east and Weeki Wachee 12 miles to the west. County roads fill in the rest: Wiscon Road (CR-570) ends at US-41 here, where Broad Street has grown into a 6-lane commercial arterial, and Emerson Road (CR-581) branches north toward town. Because South Brooksville straddles both main arteries, most traffic entering Brooksville from the south or west passes through it first.
Cortez Boulevard’s hospital and quarry frontier
The biggest landmark on the SR-50 side is TGH Brooksville at 17240 Cortez Boulevard, the former Brooksville Regional Hospital, which moved outside the city limits in the 2000s. Across the highway lies land that Cemex has sought to add to its Brooksville lime rock mine. The company’s 2014 request covered about 730 acres, with roughly 65 percent of the digging planned for excavators and haul trucks and a 3-mile conveyor proposed to move rock to the existing plant. The Old Spring Hill Cemetery, a historic African-American burial ground, sits inside the proposed area, and county commissioners took up the plan in 2018.
If your truck works around rock or cement, that duty leaves marks a technician learns to look for. Fine dust shortens air filter life and packs radiator and charge air cooler fins. Short loaded hauls keep exhaust temperatures low, so the particulate filter rarely gets a full regeneration. Brakes and suspension take a beating from the weight. Those are the first places we check when a work truck from this side of the county comes in.
The drive from central South Brooksville to Donto Way
Measured from the Census center point of South Brooksville, the shop is about 6 road miles and 14 minutes away by Broad Street and Cortez Boulevard. Since the CDP covers 3 sides of the city, your own trip may be a few minutes shorter or longer. The bays are open Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
A truck that starts, drives normally and shows a steady warning light can usually make that run. Overheating, an oil pressure warning, a hard derate or a no-start are different, because pushing a failing engine even a few miles is how a cooling fault becomes a cracked head. Call before you drive in those cases.
Inside the shop: what a South Brooksville diesel gets
The engines on our bench include the Power Stroke 6.0, 6.4, 6.7 and 7.3, Duramax, Cummins, Caterpillar (RDI Power is Caterpillar certified, and the 3406 is still on our list), Detroit and Volvo. They come in Ford, Ram, GM and Nissan Titan XD pickups, Sprinter vans, box trucks, Class 8 tractors from Freightliner, Peterbilt, Kenworth, Mack, Volvo, International and Western Star, buses and diesel pushers.
The work starts with questions about when the problem shows up and what changed. Then the truck goes on dealer-level software: Ford IDS for Fords, WiTECH for Ram and other Stellantis trucks, heavy-duty scan tools for the big rigs. A code only points at a system, so the technician tests that system directly, checking fuel pressure, boost, injector balance or exhaust backpressure, before anyone orders a part. You receive a digital vehicle inspection with photos and the technician’s notes, approve the repair, and the labor carries a 3-year / 36,000-mile warranty. Our diesel service and repair page lays out the full scope, from fuel injection and turbochargers to DPF, EGR and electrical work.
