The Villages had 79,077 residents in 2020, and between 2010 and 2019 it sold 24,440 homes, more than any other master-planned community in the country. Building homes at that pace, and stocking five town centers and 18 grocery stores for the people who live in them, takes trucks. When one of those trucks stops, on a job site, behind a store or on one of the highways that frame the community, RDI Power’s mobile service brings a diesel technician from our Brooksville shop to it. We have no shop or office in The Villages; the technician and the service truck come to you.
Highways around the edges of The Villages
The community is bounded roughly by US 301 on the west, US 27/441 on the east, CR 42 on the north and CR 470 on the south, and SR 44 crosses it. US 301 is the truck road: FDOT counts about 7,300 trucks a day on its busiest segment near The Villages, nearly 25 percent of traffic. US 27/441 carries about 3,500 trucks a day on the segment from West Boone Court to the Marion County line. Florida’s Turnpike passes through as well, with golf cart bridges crossing over it.
When a truck stops on one of these roads, the technician needs the road, the direction and the nearest cross road, plaza or business. Inside the community, a town center name or a recreation center works as a landmark. With about 750 miles of private roads inside the community as of 2018, it helps to name the nearest main road as well as the street.
Job sites south of SR 44 and near CR 470
In 2017 the developer bought 8,000 acres south of SR 44 and 2,600 acres near CR 470 for residential and commercial expansion, and golf cart overpasses opened over SR 44 in 2020 as homes spread south of the highway. Construction sites are where on-site diesel repair earns its keep. A dump truck or equipment hauler that fails mid-project has nowhere convenient to go, and dragging it off a soft site with a wrecker is slow and expensive.
A technician can drive onto firm ground beside it, diagnose it and often fix it there. The best spot is level and hard-packed, with room to walk all the way around the truck and space for the service truck alongside. Fresh fill and wet sand after a summer storm are not good footing; if the truck is sitting in either, tell us when you call so we can plan around it. While you wait, keep the crew and equipment clear of the truck, leave the hood closed on an engine that overheated, and stop trying to start one that will not crank.
Repairs a Villages job site or loading dock can host
On-site work in The Villages usually falls into a few groups:
- Starting and charging: batteries, cables, starters, alternators, belts
- Air brakes: leaking lines and fittings, brake chambers, slack adjusters
- Cooling: hoses, clamps and accessible leaks, plus belt and tensioner checks
- Fuel: filters, water separators and air in the system after service
- Electrical: sensors, connectors and harness repairs behind a warning light
- Aftertreatment: DEF faults and, where the system allows it, a parked regeneration
The technician confirms the cause with a scan and testing before replacing parts. Every job is documented with a digital vehicle inspection, photos and notes included, so a site superintendent, a store manager or a fleet office sees exactly what was found and fixed.
Personal diesels and motorhomes in The Villages
Mobile service is set up for yards, job sites, campgrounds and the roadside. If your own diesel pickup or motorhome has a problem wherever it is parked, call and describe what it is doing. We will tell you whether it is safe to drive and the best way to handle it, which may be a tow to the Brooksville shop. RV work at RDI covers the engine, transmission, chassis, air brakes and suspension; our RV service and repair page goes into detail. Veterans, active military, police and fire receive 10% off.
Getting a Villages truck to the Brooksville bays
Engine overhauls, transmission work and jobs that need a lift happen in our Brooksville shop. When the scan tool points there, we plan the move with you, including the tow and when the truck can be spared, and the diagnosis goes with it. Labor on mobile and shop repairs is warrantied for 3 years or 36,000 miles.
During weekday hours, 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM, anyone can call (352) 433-3800. RDI Fleet accounts have roadside help around the clock. Contractors and service companies with several units working here can set up planned maintenance; see fleet maintenance in The Villages.
