Okahumpka is small: 240 residents in the 2020 Census, one ZIP code (34762) and a handful of county roads in western Lake County. What puts it on a diesel technician’s map is the Turnpike. The Okahumpka Service Plaza at milepost 299 sells diesel around the clock, and FDOT counts about 12,100 trucks a day on the nearby stretch, close to 20 percent of all traffic. RDI Power has nothing based in Okahumpka; our mobile technicians cover it from the Brooksville shop, bringing diagnostic tools and on-site repair equipment to the truck.
Breakdowns around the Okahumpka Service Plaza
The plaza at milepost 299 serves both directions of the Turnpike and has truck parking, but space is limited and Florida’s Turnpike does not allow overnight parking there. A truck that pulls in with a warning light can fuel up and sit for a while. It cannot wait there for days on parts. That puts a premium on an accurate diagnosis early, so parts can be found and the next step decided before the clock runs out.
Whether a repair can be done inside the plaza depends on the space and the plaza’s rules, so tell us exactly where the truck is parked and we will work out the plan with you. If you are still out on the road, a newer landmark helps: a golf cart bridge, opened in August 2023, crosses the Turnpike just south of the plaza.
Okahumpka’s county roads: CR 470, CR 33 and CR 48
Off the toll road, Okahumpka sits on a small grid of county roads. County Road 470 runs 3 miles west to the Turnpike interchange at Exit 296. County Road 33 heads 1.5 miles northeast to US 27, meeting it 3 miles south of Leesburg. County Road 48 runs east to US 27 and about 9 miles southwest to Center Hill. On US 27 near Okahumpka, FDOT counts about 2,700 trucks a day.
On these roads, give the technician the road name, the junction you are nearest and which side the truck is on. Rural shoulders can be soft. If the truck is off the pavement, say so, because firm footing matters for jacking the truck and for parking the service truck next to it.
Waiting safely on the Turnpike near Okahumpka
Traffic passes fast on the Turnpike, so get the truck as far right as it will go, turn on the hazards and set out your warning triangles. Then get yourself well away from the truck and the travel lanes, behind the guardrail if there is one. Do not keep cranking an engine that will not start; it drains the batteries the technician needs to test it. Photograph the dash warnings before shutting down, since some faults clear on restart.
What can be fixed beside the Turnpike at Okahumpka
Many highway breakdowns come down to a single failed part. Jobs a technician can usually handle where the truck sits:
- An air line chafed through, a leaking fitting or a ruptured brake chamber
- Batteries or a starter on a truck that will not crank after a fuel stop
- An alternator or belt failure that drained the batteries on the road
- Fuel filters plugged by contaminated fuel, and water in the separator
- A coolant hose that split in the heat
- Sensor or wiring faults that put the engine in derate
The technician scans first, confirms the fault, and only then replaces parts. Afterward you get a digital inspection with photos and notes, the same record our shop produces, which is useful when the truck belongs to a carrier based hundreds of miles away.
Okahumpka breakdowns that need the Brooksville bays
Internal engine damage, transmission failures and work that needs a lift come to our Brooksville shop. We plan the tow with you and explain what the diagnosis found, so the truck arrives with a known problem. Repairs on site or in the shop carry the RDI Power labor warranty of 3 years or 36,000 miles.
Weekdays from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM, anyone can call (352) 433-3800. Outside those hours, roadside help is for RDI Fleet accounts, who have it 24/7; our Okahumpka fleet maintenance page explains how fleets that run this corridor set that up.
