Tavares carries the nickname America’s Seaplane City, thanks to the city-owned seaplane base on Lake Dora, but on the ground it is a junction town. US 441 runs through north Tavares, 6 miles from Mount Dora to the east and 10 from Leesburg to the west. SR 19 joins it, then leads 5 miles northeast to Eustis and 14 miles southwest to the Turnpike near Groveland. On SR 19, FDOT counts about 3,200 trucks a day near Tavares, close to 19 percent of all traffic. RDI Power has no shop here. Our mobile technicians come out from Brooksville to fix trucks on these roads and at yards, docks and job sites in town.
US 441 and SR 19 through the Lake County seat
On US 441, the direction you were heading, toward Leesburg or toward Mount Dora, and the nearest cross street tell the technician where to go. On SR 19, say whether you are north of town toward Eustis or south toward the Turnpike. Tavares also has landmarks that are hard to miss: AdventHealth Waterman, which moved to Tavares in 2003; the Lake Technical College Transportation Innovation Hub at 950 Captain Haynes Road; and the seaplane base on the lakefront.
If the truck is still rolling when trouble starts, a side street or lot off the highway is a better place to stop than a highway shoulder. Turn the hazards on, set out your triangles and note what the dash is showing before you shut the engine off.
Rail-served docks and yards around Tavares
Tavares is the main hub of the Florida Central Railroad, the only surviving rail line through Lake County, with branches to Umatilla and Sorrento. A 2013 upgrade worth $18.4 million rebuilt 57 miles of track from the CSX connection in Orlando to Umatilla. Regional Rail, which runs the line, says it serves industries in Tavares and offers 8 transload facilities, where freight moves between railcar and truck, plus warehousing.
When a truck fails at a dock or in a yard, a paved lot is an ideal place for an on-site repair. The technician can park alongside, and there is room to get under the truck safely. Tell us the gate or dock number and whether the truck is loaded, and whether it is blocking a door someone else needs.
Buses that will not start in Tavares
A shuttle or church bus that will not start in a Tavares parking lot strands a lot of people at once. Those no-starts usually come down to the same handful of causes as a truck: discharged or failed batteries, a corroded cable end or ground, a starter that clicks but will not turn, or a fuel problem after the bus sat. On a bus, a parasitic draw from lighting or accessories left on is worth checking too. A technician can test each of those on site, make the repair, and make sure the charging system is putting back what the starter takes.
Air brake trouble on a Tavares roadside
Air brake problems can stop a heavy truck outright: a ruptured line, a leaking fitting, a failed brake chamber or spring brakes that will not release. A low air warning means stop where it is safe, not limp to the next exit. On site, a technician finds the leak with the system charged and listening or soap-testing at the fittings, replaces lines, fittings and chambers, checks slack adjusters and pushrod stroke, and confirms the system builds pressure in normal time and holds it before the truck moves again. Our brake systems page explains air brake service in more depth.
Other repairs finished in Tavares without a tow
Plenty of other calls end without a wrecker. A technician can replace batteries, cables and starters on a no-start, or an alternator or belt on a truck that lost its charging. Split coolant hoses and loose clamps get replaced. Plugged fuel filters and water in the separator get serviced, with the fuel system bled afterward so it restarts. Wiring and sensor faults behind warning lights and derates get traced with a scan tool and a meter.
Every repair is confirmed by testing before parts go on, and every visit ends with a digital vehicle inspection, photos and technician notes included.
