Mobile diesel mechanics and fleet maintenance in Pinellas County

Pinellas is a built-out peninsula with the largest manufacturing workforce in the Tampa Bay region, and its trucks work tight streets and busy arterials. RDI Power technicians come out from Brooksville to repair them on site.

Mobile diesel mechanics and fleet maintenance in Pinellas County, RDI Power

Pinellas County fills the peninsula between the Gulf and Tampa Bay, from Tarpon Springs at the Pasco line down to the Sunshine Skyway at St. Petersburg. It is densely populated almost end to end, so diesel work here is less about long rural hauls and more about manufacturing districts, city sanitation yards, contractors and the arterials that tie them together. RDI Power does not have a shop in Pinellas. Our technicians come out from Brooksville, diagnose and repair trucks where they are, and plan any heavy bay work into Brooksville with you.

US 19, I-275 and the bridges into Pinellas County

US 19 is the county’s spine. As of 2017 it ran at freeway standard with service roads from just south of 49th Street North to north of SR 580, and its SR 60 interchange in Clearwater is described as the world’s first single-point urban interchange. I-275 comes in over the Skyway from Manatee County and carries about 14,400 trucks a day near St. Petersburg, by FDOT’s 2025 count. In 2024, 2 tolled links opened in mid-county: the Gateway Expressway, elevated over 118th Avenue North from US 19 in Pinellas Park to I-275, and SR 686A, riding the median of Roosevelt Boulevard from the Bayside Bridge in Largo.

Toward Hillsborough, US 92 crosses on the Gandy Bridge, which cut the St. Petersburg to Tampa trip from 43 miles to 19 when it opened in 1924, and the SR 580 bridge spans Old Tampa Bay between Safety Harbor and Oldsmar, where SR 584, Tampa Road, meets it. For a truck down on one of these routes, see mobile diesel repair in St. Petersburg, mobile diesel repair in Largo or mobile diesel repair in Oldsmar.

Manufacturing, rail and refuse: who runs diesel in Pinellas County

Pinellas County Economic Development reports more than 34,000 manufacturing workers, the largest manufacturing workforce in the Tampa Bay region and the 3rd largest manufacturing base in Florida. Much of it sits in mid-county. The Gateway area shared by St. Petersburg and Pinellas Park is home to Jabil’s headquarters, Lockheed Martin Aeronautics runs a fabrication and assembly plant in Pinellas Park, and St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport is a Foreign Trade Zone with its own industrial park. In Lealman, the Joe’s Creek Industrial District holds about 162 acres of industrial land use and one of the few heavy manufacturing zones in south Pinellas. Our pages on fleet maintenance in Pinellas Park and fleet maintenance in Lealman cover that district.

CSX’s Clearwater Subdivision still brings daily freight trains through Oldsmar, Clearwater and Largo, ending at a small yard northwest of downtown St. Petersburg with spurs to nearby industries.

Refuse is a big diesel user here. Every load of garbage collected in the county goes to the Solid Waste Disposal Complex on 114th Avenue North, where the waste-to-energy plant burns about 2,700 tons a day. Several cities run their own trucks to it. St. Petersburg’s sanitation service handles more than 5,900 commercial accounts and roll-off work, Clearwater is moving to a single GPS-tracked sanitation fleet, and Dunedin’s Public Works fleet totals 302 pieces, with 13 new solid waste vehicles planned from 2026 to 2031. Add PSTA’s Scherer Drive base, built for up to 300 buses, and a school district running 333 buses about 9.1 million miles a year. Fleet maintenance in Clearwater and fleet maintenance in Dunedin look at those city fleets.

Working on site in a built-out county

Space is the first question on a Pinellas County call. A plant lot in the Gateway area, a contractor yard in Largo or a sanitation yard usually has room; a curb lane on Ulmerton Road does not. The technician needs firm pavement on at least one side of the truck and a place to park the service truck out of traffic. If the truck sits inside a secured facility, we arrange access with your contact before the visit.

The repair itself follows the same order every time: connect dealer-level software (Ford IDS, WiTECH or heavy duty tools), read codes and live data, test what they point to, confirm the cause, then fix it. Starters and alternators, battery cables, belts and hoses, air leaks, brake chambers, fuel filters and water in fuel, and sensor or harness faults are typical on-site work. An engine teardown or a transmission rebuild belongs in the Brooksville bays, and we plan how and when the truck gets there. Each visit ends with a digital inspection that includes photos, and the work carries RDI Power’s 3-year/36,000-mile labor warranty. The mobile diesel repair page has the full picture.

RDI Fleet for Pinellas County operators

RDI Fleet gives a Pinellas operation a maintenance calendar instead of a string of breakdown calls. The plan starts with an inventory of every unit at your yard, then sets PM by what each truck does: delivery trucks on US 19 by miles, packer and roll-off trucks by hours and PTO time, buses by the calendar. Annual DOT inspections are done on the same visit as PM.

A Pinellas fleet account gets priority on our schedule, can reach roadside help at any hour and has fleet repairs backed for 2 years or 24,000 miles. Photo reports pile up into a service history for each unit. To see how the program works, read fleet maintenance, then call with a short list of the trucks you run in Pinellas County and how they are used.

Questions we hear

Does RDI Power have a garage in St. Petersburg, Clearwater or elsewhere in Pinellas County?
No. RDI Power has one shop, in Brooksville. Pinellas County work is done at your yard, job site or roadside location, and anything that needs a bay is planned into Brooksville with you.
Can a technician fix a truck stopped on US 19 or the Gateway Expressway in Pinellas County?
Often, yes, once the truck is somewhere safe to work. On a freeway section with service roads, getting onto the service road or into a parking lot makes the repair possible. Fleet accounts have roadside help 24/7; anyone can call during shop hours.
Can RDI Fleet set PM by engine hours for refuse and roll-off trucks in Pinellas County?
Yes. Trucks that spend the day packing, lifting and idling are often better served by hour-based intervals with PTO time counted, and the plan can set them that way unit by unit.
