Largo grew up on citrus. It was a packing, canning and shipping center once remembered as Citrus City, and the groves and ranches around it have since given way to homes, shopping centers and light industry. Trucks still move through it every day: on SR 686 and SR 688, which run through Largo to I-275, on US 19 and Alt 19 heading north and south, and alongside CSX’s Clearwater Subdivision, which carries freight through the city daily. RDI Power has no Largo shop. When a diesel stops here, our technicians come to it from Brooksville with diagnostic tools and the equipment to repair it on site.
SR 688: Largo’s truck-heavy corridor
FDOT’s 2025 traffic inventory counts about 6,780 trucks a day on SR 688 between US 19 and 49th Street North, 14.9% of roughly 45,500 vehicles. That is about 1 vehicle in 7. US 19 carries about 6,497 trucks a day near Largo, 7.1% of a much larger total, and SR 686, the road to St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport, carries about 5,720 at 12.3%.
With that many heavy trucks on one road, air system failures deserve a plan of their own. A tractor that loses air pressure gives a low air warning first; if pressure keeps falling, the spring brakes set and the truck will not move until the leak is fixed. Do not try to make the next light on a low air warning. Get as far off SR 688 as you safely can while you still have control, set out your triangles and call. On site, the technician listens for the leak, soap-tests fittings and repairs what is found:
- Cracked or chafed air lines and leaking fittings
- Worn gladhand seals between tractor and trailer
- Brake chambers with failed diaphragms
- Slack adjusters out of adjustment
- Valves that stick or leak
Toll lanes, interchanges and the Bayside Bridge
Largo’s road layout changed in 2024. The tolled Gateway Expressway segment, SR 686A, now rides in the median of Roosevelt Boulevard from the Bayside Bridge to SR 690, with access toward Ulmerton Road and the airport. When you call, tell us whether the truck is in the toll lanes or on the boulevard beside them; they run side by side but are reached in different ways, and a limited-access lane may not leave room for a technician to work.
US 19 adds its own landmarks. It has interchanges at SR 688 and SR 693 in eastern Largo and at SR 686, the airport road. Name the nearest one, the direction you were traveling and whether you are on the mainline or a ramp. St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport, about 6 miles east of downtown Largo, is another reference point everyone knows.
What gets fixed on site in Largo
Air problems are only part of the list. After scanning the truck and confirming the fault, a technician in Largo can often finish these repairs at the yard, the job site or the shoulder:
- Batteries, cables, starters and alternators on pickups, box trucks and tractors
- Cooling system leaks at hoses, clamps and accessible fittings, plus broken belts
- Fuel filters, water separators and air in the fuel system
- Sensors and wiring behind warning lights and derates, including DEF faults
- Trailer lighting circuits, plugs and wiring
Our brake systems page covers brake work in more depth. Every on-site job ends with a digital inspection: photos of each finding and the technician’s notes, so whoever pays for the repair sees exactly what was done.
Largo repairs that go north to Brooksville
A shoulder on SR 688 is no place to pull a transmission or open an engine. Internal engine repairs, transmission rebuilds, alignments and jobs that need a lift are done in our Brooksville bays. In those cases the Largo visit still pays off, because the diagnosis is done before the truck moves. We plan the rest with you, from the date the unit can come out of service to how it makes the trip, and the shop picks up exactly where the roadside work stopped.
Calling RDI about a Largo breakdown
Fleet accounts are covered around the clock by RDI Fleet roadside assistance, so a fleet tractor down on SR 688 at 2:00 AM is still a call to (352) 433-3800. Largo owners outside the fleet program can reach the shop on that number weekdays from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Have the road, direction, nearest interchange or cross street, the unit’s make and engine and what it did before it stopped ready when you call.
Largo is one of many stops in the program described on our mobile diesel repair page. Trucks working the beach side along Alt 19 are covered on our Seminole mobile diesel repair page, and Largo yards that want maintenance on a schedule can start with RDI Fleet in Largo.
