Homosassa is a river town, and its diesels work like it: boat trailers and RVs make up much of the traffic on Yulee Drive and Fishbowl Drive. RDI Power does not have a shop in Homosassa. Our only location is 1665 Donto Way in Brooksville, about 24 road miles and 35 minutes from the middle of the community, and our mobile technicians cover the trucks that cannot make that trip.

Homosassa: a river of fishes, a sugar mill and a working port

The name is usually traced to a Seminole term meaning “river of fishes” or “pepper ridge.” From 1851 to 1864, David Levy Yulee ran a 5,000-acre sugar plantation and steam mill here, and the ruins are now Yulee Sugar Mill Ruins Historic State Park. Old Homosassa, reached along Yulee Drive past its galleries, is an original Florida fishing village where scalloping and boating are part of daily life. Citrus County’s tourism office describes Homosassa as both a working commercial fishing port and one of the state’s top sport fishing destinations, and Sport Fishing Magazine has called it one of the best places in the world to catch tarpon.

The 2020 Census counted 2,299 people in the Homosassa CDP, which runs west on both sides of the Homosassa River to marshes and islands at the Gulf. US-19/98 marks its eastern side, and the larger, suburban Homosassa Springs lies across the highway.

Tow rigs on Yulee Drive and Fishbowl Drive

Towing changes what wears out on a diesel. The transmission carries more heat, so fluid condition and cooler health matter more than on an empty truck. Brakes do more work, on the truck and on the trailer. Trailer wiring, plugs and brake controllers fail in ways that look like truck problems. Cooling systems get tested on a summer launch day with a heavy boat behind the truck.

The ramp itself is part of the story. Backing down puts the trailer’s hubs and brakes in the water, and on a shallow ramp the truck’s rear wheels can get wet too. Trailer bearings dunked in salt water need regular repacking, and trailer brakes corrode quickly, so a trailer that launches often deserves its own inspection when the truck comes in.

When a towing truck comes in, we look beyond the complaint: transmission fluid and temperature data, the cooling system under load, brake condition and the hitch and wiring. Each finding shows up in a digital vehicle inspection with photos and notes before any work is approved.

Salt, storms and Halls River Road

Homosassa reaches all the way to the Gulf, and storm surge can travel a long way back up its roads. During Hurricane Helene in September 2024, floodwaters came up Halls River Road several miles from the river. A truck that sat in that kind of water, or one that spends its life near salt, has a specific list of weak points: wheel bearings and differentials where water got past the seals, starters and alternators, wiring connectors that turn green inside, brake components and frame hardware. Water near the air intake or in the fuel system is a reason not to start the engine at all until it has been checked.

Corrosion damage often shows up months after the water is gone, as an intermittent electrical fault or a bearing that starts to hum. A thorough inspection after any flood exposure costs far less than chasing those failures one at a time.

From Yulee Drive to Donto Way

The measured route runs east on Yulee Drive (CR-490) to US-19/98, south to Chassahowitzka where US-98 splits off, then southeast on US-98 into Brooksville and Cobb Road. A truck that runs and drives normally can make that 35-minute trip. One that is overheating, slipping, losing oil pressure or stuck in a derate should not; call (352) 433-3800 first, and we will help decide between a tow and a mobile visit. Our labor is warrantied for 3 years or 36,000 miles either way, and the full scope of engine work is on our diesel service and repair page.

Homosassa questions

Is Homosassa the same place as Homosassa Springs?
No. Homosassa is the riverfront community west of US-19/98, stretching along both sides of the Homosassa River toward the Gulf, while Homosassa Springs is the larger community east of the highway. Most addresses in both use Homosassa ZIP codes, and both are served from our Brooksville shop.
What should be checked on a Homosassa truck that went through storm surge water?
Everything the water reached: wheel bearings and axle housings for water intrusion, the starter, alternator and wiring connectors, the air intake if water came near it, and the fuel tank. Salt water speeds up corrosion, so the inspection should happen soon rather than after the first failure.
How do I get from Homosassa to RDI Power in Brooksville?
From the middle of Homosassa, the route we measured runs east on Yulee Drive (CR-490) to US-19/98, south to where US-98 splits off at Chassahowitzka, then southeast on US-98 to Cobb Road. Plan on about 24 road miles and 35 minutes.
