High Point was established in 1974 as a retirement golf community for people 55 and over, and it is now in its fifth decade. The 2020 Census counted 3,873 residents behind its guarded entrance on Cortez Boulevard. It lies about 8 miles from the Gulf by the community’s own description, and closer to US-19 than to downtown Brooksville. RDI Power’s only shop is about 16 minutes east, and it repairs diesel pickups, work trucks, heavy rigs and diesel pushers.
High Point’s frontage on Cortez Boulevard
The gate on Highpoint Boulevard opens onto SR-50. HCA Florida Oak Hill Hospital, at 11375 Cortez Boulevard, sits just before the High Point gateway; Wikipedia’s list of top county employers puts it at 1,561 jobs. The entrance to the Sand Hill Scout Reservation is on SR-50, and between the reservation and US-19 the Withlacoochee River Electric Cooperative keeps an office. Head 4 miles west and SR-50 reaches US-19 at Weeki Wachee.
High Point is bordered by North Weeki Wachee on the north and west, Brookridge on the east, and Spring Hill across SR-50 to the south. Addresses use Brooksville and ZIP 34613.
Behind the High Point gate
Inside, the community centers on High Point Golf Club, a member-owned private course founded in 1976 with 18 holes, par 72, and manufactured homes lining both sides of the fairways. Residents have a pool, a library, a veterans memorial and a community storage yard, and registered golf carts can be driven day and night inside the gates. None of that is diesel country. The diesel side of High Point is out on the SR-50 frontage, plus whatever diesel pickup a resident keeps at home.
Active and veteran military, police and fire get 10 percent off at RDI Power, a detail worth knowing in a community with its own veterans memorial.
Driving a diesel from High Point to Donto Way
From the census center point of High Point, the trip is just under 9 road miles: out the gate to SR-50, then east past Brookridge and the Suncoast Parkway interchange, about 16 minutes in all. The shop is open Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM. A truck that runs and drives normally can make that drive. A truck that is overheating, low on oil pressure, losing air or in a hard derate should not, and a call to (352) 433-3800 will sort out whether a technician or a tow comes next.
Reading a High Point diesel’s symptoms
Some complaints come up again and again on diesel trucks, and each one points the diagnosis in a direction:
- A DEF or emissions warning with a countdown. The truck is telling you it will limit speed soon. The cause can be the fluid itself, a heater, a pump, a doser or a NOx sensor, and each gets tested before parts are ordered.
- A rough idle or a knock that was not there before. Injector balance rates and fuel pressure come first; a single failing injector can make a whole engine sound sick.
- Oil on the driveway or the skid plate. We clean, trace and confirm the leak point, because oil runs downhill and the wet spot is rarely where the leak starts.
- A water-in-fuel light. Draining the separator is only the first step; water came from somewhere, and fuel system parts do not tolerate it.
