The University census area sits just north of the University of South Florida, bounded by I-275 on the west, and it is one of the busiest places in north Hillsborough. USF itself sits just to the southeast, inside Tampa city limits, which makes it an easy reference point on a call. HART’s University Area Transit Center is a transfer point for 10 local routes and the northern end of MetroRapid Route 400. Redevelopment of the former University Mall is under way. Medical and dental groups cluster along Fletcher Avenue next to AdventHealth Tampa. All of that keeps diesels moving on the area’s streets. RDI Power’s mobile service sends a technician from our Brooksville shop when one of them stops.
Job site breakdowns at University area construction
The 1,195-bed Hub Tampa Fowler student housing project began construction in 2025 as part of the Rithm redevelopment of the former University Mall, and it is scheduled to open in 2027. Large builds bring dump trucks, flatbeds, concrete trucks and service trucks, and a truck that dies inside a fenced site is often easier to fix there than to tow out.
For a job site call, tell us:
- The site entrance to use and who will meet the technician
- Where on the site the truck is parked and whether the ground around it is firm
- What the truck was doing when it failed, such as idling, dumping or climbing out of a hole
- Any site rules the technician needs to follow on arrival
The technician arrives with scan tools and common parts, diagnoses the failure and, when the fix is sound on site, makes the repair. Starting, charging, fuel delivery, cooling leaks, air system leaks and wiring faults are all regular on-site jobs.
Deliveries along Fletcher, Fowler and 131st Avenue in University
SR-582 near University carries about 10,192 trucks a day, 18.7% of its traffic, the highest truck share in FDOT’s 2025 counts for this area. The University Area Community Plan also calls 131st Avenue, between North 30th Street/Bruce B. Downs and Nebraska Avenue, an economically important east-west corridor slated for a redevelopment plan.
A box truck or a Sprinter van that will not restart after a delivery stop is a typical mobile call. Often the cause is simple: a weak battery after a day of restarts, a corroded connection, a failed starter, or a sensor that will not let the engine fire. Each of those can usually be repaired at the curb or in the loading area. If the truck is blocking a lane, move it when it is safe to do so before you call.
Fletcher Avenue medical offices and parking garages in University
Fletcher Avenue east of I-275 has become a cluster of medical and dental groups next to AdventHealth Tampa. If your van makes deliveries or service calls there, a breakdown may happen in a parking garage rather than on the street, and garages raise a practical problem: a service truck may not fit under the clearance bar. When you call, tell us whether the van is in a garage, which level it is on and whether it can be pushed or rolled to a surface lot. If it has to stay put, the technician brings what can be carried in by hand, and the rest of the plan follows from the diagnosis.
University traffic around the transit center
In 2021 HART began upgrading the University Area Transit Center, raising pavement along 27th Street and increasing bus stops from 2 to 6. With 10 routes feeding those stops, curb space near the center is spoken for. If your truck stops near the transit center or on a bus route, getting it clear of the stops makes the repair safer for everyone, the technician included.
How a University mobile repair ends
Every visit gets a digital vehicle inspection with photos and the technician’s notes, so you have a record of what failed and what was replaced. Labor carries RDI Power’s warranty of 3 years / 36,000 miles. When the failure turns out to be bigger, such as internal engine damage or a failed transmission, we plan the trip to our Brooksville shop with you instead of attempting it at the curb. If the fix simply needs a part the technician is not carrying, you get a straight answer on when it can be in hand and whether the truck can sit safely where it is until then.

What a technician can handle on a University call is laid out further on mobile diesel repair. The city southeast past USF is covered on our Temple Terrace mobile diesel repair page, and fleets that want scheduled service can read University fleet maintenance.
