Lacoochee grew up around a sawmill, went quiet when the mill closed in 1959, and is now being rebuilt around industry. RDI Power repairs pickups, work trucks, tractors, buses and trailers from Lacoochee at our shop in Brooksville, and our mobile technicians cover the trucks that cannot make the trip.
Lacoochee’s Cummer mill decades
Cummer Sons Cypress Co. finished its Lacoochee mill in 1923 and became Pasco County’s largest employer, with more than 1,100 workers. Logging trains hauled timber in from more than 50 square miles of company land in Pasco, Sumter and Polk counties, and at the operation’s peak roughly 100 worker homes lined the sand streets of the company town. Residents voted against incorporating in 1954. The last cypress log went through the mill on June 5, 1959, and with it went the county’s biggest employer.
That history still shapes the map. The old mill site covers about 100 acres on Bower Road southeast of town, and the Moss Town neighborhood runs along Cummer Road. Lacoochee Elementary School and the CSX line through town make easy reference points.
Bower Road, Coit Road and Lacoochee’s second industrial chapter
The mill site is busy again. A precast concrete plant that supplies major Florida road projects now runs there, on land the Dade City Business Center bought in 2019 for $1.2 million. Next door, the county has been assembling a 90-acre industrial area off Bower and Coit roads, with a rail spur planned and The Reinforced Earth Company on site as of 2021, and a separate 33-acre light-industrial tract won a land use change in 2022. Coit, Bower and Cummer roads were slated for rebuilding with block grant and state money, including a $5,469,395 state grant for industrial-area right-of-way.
If your trucks run in and out of that industrial area, our page on semi truck repair in Lacoochee covers tractors and heavy straight trucks, and fleet maintenance in Lacoochee explains how an RDI Fleet plan handles a Lacoochee yard.
Getting from Lacoochee to Donto Way
From the middle of Lacoochee, the mapped route runs west on SR 575 and Trilby Road (CR 575) to US-98, north to SR-50 and west on Cortez Boulevard into Brooksville. That is about 20 road miles and half an hour. There is a second way out to the east: SR 575 continues past the Hernando County line as Burwell Road (CR 575) and meets SR 50 in Ridge Manor. From there, Cortez Boulevard runs west to Brooksville, so a driver who would rather avoid US-98 has a choice.
Diesels we repair for Lacoochee owners
On the light side, that means Ford Super Duty trucks with the Power Stroke, Ram pickups with the Cummins, GM heavy-duty pickups with the Duramax, the Nissan Titan XD and Sprinter vans; our Lacoochee truck repair page goes deeper on those. Medium duty covers chassis cabs, box trucks and buses. Heavy duty covers Freightliner, Peterbilt, Kenworth, Mack, Volvo, International and Western Star tractors with Cummins, Detroit, Volvo and Caterpillar engines, and RDI Power is Caterpillar certified.
The systems behind most complaints are the same across weight classes: fuel injection, where we are a Bosch dealer and use Alliant Power fuel injection parts; turbochargers; cooling; the DPF, regen and EGR side of emissions; glow plugs; and wiring faults that set codes. Each of those systems gets a fuller explanation on our diesel service and repair page, and the same technicians handle them for Lacoochee trucks.
What a Lacoochee repair looks like from the first call
It starts on the phone. You tell us what the truck is doing and where it is, and we help decide whether it can be driven 20 miles, should be towed, or needs a technician sent out. At the shop, diagnosis comes before parts: dealer-level software such as Ford IDS and WiTECH reads the modules, and the suspect system is tested directly to confirm the cause. A digital vehicle inspection with photos and technician notes comes to you before you approve the repair. Our service advisor spent 35 years as a technician at a Chevrolet dealership, so the explanation you get is a straight one. Labor carries a 3-year / 36,000-mile warranty.
Trilby, just west along CR 575, has its own page on diesel repair in Trilby. For Lacoochee trucks, call (352) 433-3800 and describe the problem; we will tell you the best way to get it fixed.
