Bushnell takes its name from John W. Bushnell, the engineer who brought the railroad through, and more than a century later the town still sits on a freight rail line, now with I-75 running along its western edge. RDI Power does not have a shop in Bushnell. Our bays are on Donto Way in Brooksville, about 40 minutes away, and our mobile technicians cover the trucks that cannot make that trip. Here is how diesel repair for Bushnell works and which of our Bushnell pages to read next.
Bushnell: railroad name, county seat, Dade Battlefield
The post office opened on October 28, 1885, and the city incorporated on December 14, 1911. Today Bushnell is the county seat of Sumter County, home of the Sumter District Schools headquarters and South Sumter High, with 3,047 residents at the 2020 Census. The city describes itself as about 50 miles north of Tampa and 50 miles west of Orlando, and its motto is Committed to the Quality of Life.
History runs deep here. The Dade battle of December 28, 1835, which opened the Second Seminole War, was fought at what is now Dade Battlefield Historic State Park, 80 acres on CR-603 between I-75 Exit 314 and US-301, with a reenactment each year on the weekend after Christmas. Florida National Cemetery, a 512.9-acre VA cemetery in the Withlacoochee State Forest, sits near town and has held interments since 1988.
Most of the city mails as 33513, though part of it falls in 33538, the Lake Panasoffkee ZIP. Either way, the shop, the phone number and the technicians are the same, and a Bushnell address on the paperwork changes nothing about how the truck gets diagnosed.
I-75 Exit 314 and the truck stop at Bushnell
Exit 314, where I-75 meets CR-48, is Bushnell’s front door for heavy trucks. In December 2017 Love’s Travel Stops opened at 2615 County Road 48, adding 99 truck parking spaces and about 60 jobs. CR-48, which becomes West Belt Avenue in town and is also signed SR-48, carries traffic from the interchange to downtown.
An interstate truck that pulls off at Exit 314 with a warning light is a long way from its home shop. The failures that send drivers off the highway are often electrical faults, air leaks, aftertreatment derates or a sensor that has the engine protecting itself, and a mobile technician can often sort those out in a parking space. Our Bushnell semi truck repair page covers that side in more depth.
Rail, utilities and schools: what else runs on diesel in Bushnell
The CSX Wildwood Subdivision follows US-301, CR-48 and CR-475 through town toward I-75 Exit 321 at Lake Panasoffkee; Amtrak’s Palmetto used it until 2004. The city runs its own electric, water, wastewater and sanitation utilities, with electric service to more than 1,150 customers and sanitation service to more than 1,100. Sumter District Schools, headquartered here, now runs its buses from a new $2 million garage in nearby Sumterville that serves nearly 4,000 students. Each March, the 10-day Sumter County Fair fills the fairgrounds at 7620 SR-471.
For a private diesel owner, that adds up to a county seat with roads leading in every direction: US-301 north and south, CR-476 east and west, CR-475 north along the tracks, and I-75 to the west.
The I-75 drive from Bushnell to Donto Way
From central Bushnell, take SR-48 west to I-75 at Exit 314, head south on I-75, then go west on Cortez Boulevard (SR-50) into Brooksville. The trip is about 28 road miles and roughly 40 minutes in normal traffic. A truck that drives normally with a steady warning light can usually make it; one that is overheating, derating or losing oil pressure should not be put on the interstate. That is when a technician comes to you at a yard, a job site or the roadside, and fleet accounts have 24/7 roadside assistance.
How a Bushnell diesel gets fixed right the first time
A 40-minute drive is too far to make twice for the same problem. So the work starts with listening: when the symptom shows up, loaded or empty, hot or cold. Then the truck gets read with dealer-level software, Ford IDS for Fords and WiTECH for Ram and other Stellantis trucks, and the suspect system is tested directly, whether that means fuel pressure, boost or injector balance. A digital vehicle inspection sends you photos and notes before any repair is approved.
We work on light, medium and heavy duty diesels: Power Stroke, Duramax and Cummins pickups, box trucks and chassis cabs, Class 8 tractors, buses and diesel pushers, with Cummins, Detroit, Volvo and Caterpillar engines on the heavy side. RDI Power is Caterpillar certified, a Bosch dealer and an Alliant Power fuel injection shop, and the labor is warrantied for 3 years or 36,000 miles. If you served, or serve on a Sumter County police or fire crew, ask about 10% off. Our diesel service and repair page lists every system we handle.
