A diesel pickup in South Brooksville can lead 2 lives in the same week. Some days it pulls a loaded trailer down a rural road; on others it creeps along Broad Street, which has grown into a 6-lane commercial strip where Wiscon Road meets it. Each kind of driving wears the truck differently, and RDI Power diagnoses both at our shop on Donto Way.
Wiscon Road towing and Broad Street traffic
The Census counted more than half of South Brooksville’s residents as rural in 2020, If your pickup tows on those rural roads, 3 systems feel it first. The transmission runs hotter, so fluid condition and the cooler matter. The cooling system has to shed more heat at lower road speeds. Brakes, hub bearings and tires carry weight they were not sized for on the drive to work. A hitch that has been hooked and unhooked for years deserves a look at its pins, receiver and wiring connector as well; our hitch service page covers that side.
Stop-and-go traffic on the commercial stretch of US-41 is hard on a modern diesel in a different way. Short trips at low speed keep exhaust temperatures down, so the particulate filter fills with soot and the truck regenerates more often, sometimes interrupted before it finishes. EGR valves and coolers collect soot on that same diet. A truck that regenerates every few days, smells hot after short drives or shows a rising soot load on a scan tool needs a diagnosis before the filter or EGR parts do.
Power Stroke, Duramax and Cummins problems seen from South Brooksville
Each engine family has a short list of faults worth knowing about:
- 6.0 and 6.4 Power Stroke. The 6.0 is known for oil cooler and EGR cooler failures and for head gasket trouble. The 6.4 adds radiator leaks and fuel dilution of the oil, which frequent interrupted regenerations make worse.
- 6.7 Power Stroke. Oil leaks and fuel system concerns top the list. We wrote up the leak points in oil leaks on the 6.7L Power Stroke.
- Duramax. Early LB7 injectors are a known weak spot, and later engines bring the usual aftertreatment, sensor and fuel pump questions.
- Cummins in the Ram. The 6.7 can stick its variable geometry turbo and load its EGR system. It starts with an intake air heater rather than glow plugs, so a hard start points the diagnosis elsewhere.
A Nissan Titan XD with the 5.0L Cummins V8 and a Sprinter van get the same scan, test and photo inspection.
