A diesel pickup in Brookridge has the Suncoast Parkway at its doorstep. Exit 46 sits at the corner of the community, and from there the toll road runs 50 miles south to Tampa. That makes Brookridge an easy place to start a long trip with a trailer behind you, and an easy place to leave a truck parked for weeks between trips. Both habits have their own repair list, and RDI Power handles both at our shop on Donto Way.
Towing south on the Suncoast Parkway from Brookridge
Highway towing is steady work for a diesel, which is good, but it pushes heat into everything. Transmission fluid runs hotter under load, so its condition and the cooler matter more than mileage suggests; our transmission rebuild versus replacement article explains what happens when that heat wins. The cooling system has to hold temperature with a trailer pushing air at the grille. Exhaust gas temperatures climb, which is hard on turbochargers that are already high on hours.
The parts that connect truck and trailer deserve a look too. Receivers, pins and ball mounts wear, 7-way connectors corrode, and trailer brake controllers fail quietly until the moment you need them. Brakes, hub bearings and tires on the truck carry more weight than they do on a solo trip. Before a long tow, a technician can inspect all of it and show you the results in photos.
When a Brookridge diesel sits between trips
A diesel that waits weeks between drives has a different set of problems:
- Batteries. Most heavy-duty diesel pickups run 2 batteries, and modules draw a small current even when the truck is off. A long sit drains them, and one weak battery drags the other down with it.
- Fuel. Condensation can put water in a partly empty tank, and microbes grow where fuel meets that water, leaving sludge that plugs filters. Topping off before parking and draining the water separator help.
- DEF. Diesel exhaust fluid breaks down faster in heat. Fluid that has sat in a hot Florida tank or a jug in the garage for months may no longer meet spec, and the truck will flag a quality fault.
- Brakes and tires. Rotors grow surface rust that usually wipes off in the first few stops. Tires lose pressure while the truck is parked, so check them before the first drive.
If the truck runs rough, sets a fuel or DEF warning, or will not crank after a long sit, that is the time to bring it in rather than force it.
Ford, Ram, GM and Titan XD pickups from Brookridge
Ford trucks are diagnosed with Ford IDS and Ram trucks with WiTECH, the factory-level software for each brand, so module data and factory test routines are available without a dealer visit. Our Ford specialist spent more than 30 years at a Ford dealership, and our service advisor worked 35 years as a technician at a Chevrolet dealership, which covers a lot of Duramax history. The Nissan Titan XD with its 5.0L Cummins V8 and Sprinter vans are on the same list.
From the middle of Brookridge, the shop is about 13 minutes east on Cortez Boulevard.
