Spring Hill is inland and commercial along US-19, SR-50, Mariner Boulevard and Spring Hill Drive, and the diesel pickups and vans that work those corridors are what this page is about: Super Duty, Ram and GM heavy-duty pickups, chassis cabs with service bodies, the Nissan Titan XD and Sprinter vans. RDI Power repairs them at 1665 Donto Way in Brooksville. Heavy tractors have a page of their own.
Cold starts, smoke and warning lights
Most pickup complaints fall into a few groups, and each one has a starting point:
- Long cranking or a rough cold start. Florida mornings are rarely cold, but they do cool off in winter, and that is when weak glow plugs show up. Current Power Stroke and Duramax engines use glow plugs; the 6.7 Cummins uses an intake air heater instead. Batteries matter too, since these pickups run 2 of them and one weak battery drags down the other.
- Smoke. Black smoke usually means too much fuel or too little air: a leaking injector, a boost leak or a sticking turbo vane. White smoke can be unburned fuel on a cold start or coolant getting where it should not. Blue smoke points to oil. Each gets tested, not guessed.
- Warning lights and reduced power. A check engine light with a derate often comes from the emissions system, a sensor or a fuel pressure fault. We read the codes, then confirm the cause with live data before replacing anything.
- Coolant loss. Radiators, water pumps, hoses and EGR coolers are common sources. A pressure test finds an external leak; a level that keeps dropping with nothing visible calls for a closer look at the EGR cooler or head gasket.
Ford, Ram, GM, Titan XD and Sprinter
Each platform has its own software and its own habits. Ford trucks get diagnosed with Ford IDS and Ram trucks with WiTECH, so module data and factory test routines are available here without a trip to a dealership. GM’s Duramax pickups, the 5.0L Cummins V8 in the Titan XD and the diesel in a Sprinter van are all regular work. Vans that earn their keep making deliveries or carrying a trade get the same scan, test and photo inspection a pickup gets, because a van that sits costs its owner the same way a truck does.
Engine faults rarely travel alone on a truck that tows. If shifting has changed along with the engine complaint, our Spring Hill transmission repair page explains how we separate the 2 problems.
Getting a sick pickup from Spring Hill to Brooksville
The drive is short when the truck is healthy: Spring Hill Drive to the Suncoast Parkway at Exit 41, north to SR-50 at Exit 46, then east into Brooksville, about 12 miles in all. Whether to make that drive with a problem depends on the problem.
- Drive it in if the truck runs normally with a steady check engine light, or has a minor leak you are keeping an eye on.
- Call first if the light is flashing, the truck is derating, the temperature gauge is climbing or the oil pressure warning is on. Those can turn a repair into an engine replacement within a few miles.
- Ask for a mobile technician if the truck is at a job site or roadside and will not start or move. Some no-start problems end right there, with a technician and a scan tool.
The digital inspection that comes back with your pickup includes photos and the technician’s notes, and the labor carries our 3-year / 36,000-mile warranty. For the full pickup scope, see our light duty diesel repair page, and for what to expect at the shop itself, our Brooksville truck repair page covers it from the home side.
