Medulla is an unincorporated community of 10,871 people (2020) in south Lakeland, between the city limits and Mulberry. It grew quickly in the 1990s and early 2000s, starting with the Deer Brooke deed-restricted community and followed by many smaller subdivisions. It is a place people live rather than a freight hub, yet the roads at its edges carry a steady flow of heavy trucks. RDI Power has no shop in Medulla or anywhere else in Polk County; when a diesel stops here, a technician drives out from Brooksville with the tools to find the fault and fix it.
Florida Avenue (SR 37) along Medulla
SR 37, Florida Avenue, is Lakeland’s main north to south road and the main route south to Mulberry, whose economy is dominated by phosphate mining. FDOT’s 2025 count on the stretch between CR 540A and Fitzgerald Road shows about 38,500 vehicles a day, roughly 2,811 of them trucks. A truck that stalls in that traffic is a hazard to everyone, its driver included. Pull as far right as the truck will go, turn on the hazards, set out triangles if it is a commercial vehicle, and get yourself clear of the lanes before you call.
The Polk Parkway and SR 563 near Medulla
The Polk Transportation Planning Organization counts 6,464 trucks a day on the Polk Parkway near SR 37, more than on any Polk road it named except I-4. On a tolled expressway, the useful details are the direction of travel and the nearest interchange. SR 563, which leads north toward the parkway, is lighter for trucks: about 980 a day among 24,500 vehicles. Wherever the truck stopped, a cross street or a landmark gets the technician there with less searching.
Medulla breakdowns fixed where the truck stopped
Many roadside stops are not major failures. A few that a technician can usually finish on site:
- A Duramax or Cummins pickup towing an equipment trailer that will not restart after a fuel stop, traced to a weak battery or a failed starter
- A box truck with a squealing belt and a charging warning, fixed with a new alternator or belt tensioner
- A dump truck that will not build air, caused by a cracked line or a leaking fitting
- A work truck in derate because a sensor or connector failed
The technician scans the truck and confirms the cause before replacing parts, and the visit is written up as a digital vehicle inspection with photos, the same record you would get from a shop.
What a technician needs at a Medulla job site
A truck that will not start at a contractor’s job site near Medulla still needs a sound place for the repair. Before the technician sets out, we will ask where on the site the truck is parked, whether the service truck can pull up beside it, and what the ground is like. Packed gravel, a slab or a paved lot works; soft sand or fresh fill does not, because jacks and heavy parts need a solid base. A site contact who can open the gate and answer questions about the truck saves time, and so do the keys. If the job site is also somebody’s home, call first so we can talk through whether an on-site repair or a tow to Brooksville is the better fit.
Medulla calls that need a lift
An engine that needs to come apart or a transmission that needs a rebuild is shop work, and the shop is in Brooksville. When a Medulla breakdown turns out to be that kind of job, the technician explains why, and we plan the tow and the shop time with you. The diagnosis travels with the truck. Whether the repair happens beside the road or in the bay, RDI Power’s labor warranty is 3 years or 36,000 miles.
