Mobile repair on Pine Island comes with a condition most places do not have: the road itself. Pine Island Drive (CR-495) is the only way on or off, 2 lanes wide with mostly no shoulders and a run of culverts over open marsh. A technician from our Brooksville shop, about 17 road miles away, can reach a truck out here with diagnostic tools and on-site repair capability. Whether the repair happens where the truck stopped depends on whether anyone can work there safely.
Pine Island Drive’s narrow lanes and where to stop
If a truck starts to fail on the way in or out, the best thing you can do is keep it rolling to a place with room: the CR-550 junction in Bayport, or the island end of the road near the park. A truck that dies in a lane over the marsh is a hazard to everyone behind it and a hard place for a technician to set up.
If it does stop in the lane, turn on the hazards, place triangles only where you can do it without stepping into traffic, and get yourself clear. When you call, tell us the direction the truck faces, how far you are from Bayport or from the park at 10800 Pine Island Drive, and whether you are near a culvert. We may recommend moving the truck to a wider spot before any work starts, and we will say so plainly.
Fixes a technician can make near Pine Island
Once the truck is somewhere safe, a technician scans it and tests the suspect system before touching parts. A good share of what strands a diesel can be repaired on site: weak or corroded batteries and ground connections, which salt air encourages, starters and alternators, belts and coolant hoses, sensors that forced a derate, clogged fuel filters and water in the fuel, and air leaks on trucks with air brakes. The work is recorded in a digital inspection with photos and notes, the same as a shop job, and on-site labor carries the same 3-year / 36,000-mile warranty.
High water on CR-495 and timing a Pine Island call
In August 2023, Hurricane Idalia’s storm surge overtopped parts of Pine Island Drive and temporarily restricted access to the island. When water is over the road, do not drive a truck through it to get to help; salt water in the intake, the fuel or the electrical system turns a small problem into a large one. Wait until the road is open, then call. A truck that stalled in water should not be cranked again until someone has checked the intake and oil for water. Fleet accounts have 24/7 roadside assistance, and everyone else can reach us during weekday shop hours.
Pine Island jobs that belong in the Brooksville shop
Engine work, transmission jobs and repairs that need a lift go to the shop. From the island, the tow runs down Pine Island Drive, east on Cortez Boulevard and along SR-50 into Brooksville, and the technician’s diagnosis travels with the truck. Our Pine Island diesel repair page covers what happens there.
For the full on-site program, see mobile diesel repair, and for the park and ramps at the mainland end of CR-495, see Bayport mobile diesel repair. If your truck is stuck on or near the island, phone (352) 433-3800 and start with where it is sitting.
