Ryan Bethell started RDI Power on the road, keeping fleets running out of a service truck between Brooksville and Tampa before the shop existed. RDI Fleet is that same work organized into a program, and the corner of Alafaya around the Orange County Landfill on Young Pine Road shows why it matters. The landfill takes garbage, construction and demolition debris, yard waste and tires, opens to account haulers at 4:00 a.m. on weekdays, and is in the middle of a liner project covering 60 acres in 6 phases through October 2028. If your trucks feed that site, their maintenance should be planned as carefully as their routes.
Refuse and roll-off duty cycles around the Alafaya landfill
Hauling work is about as hard as a diesel duty cycle gets. A refuse truck stops and starts constantly on a route, then may sit idling in line at the landfill. A roll-off truck lifts heavy containers and runs short, loaded legs. Both build engine hours faster than miles, wear brakes quickly and run aftertreatment at low exhaust temperatures that make regeneration harder.
An RDI Fleet plan sets intervals around that reality:
- Engine hours as well as miles, with PTO time counted, so oil and filters are changed when the engine needs it.
- Brakes on every visit, with linings measured and air systems checked for leaks and adjustment.
- Aftertreatment every time, because a loading DPF caught at the yard is cheaper than a derate on Young Pine Road.
- Cooling systems and belts, since idle time in Florida heat is hard on them.
- Tires checked for cuts, bulges and uneven wear.
Our brake systems page explains how we inspect and repair air brakes.
Fitting yard visits around 4:00 a.m. starts in Alafaya
If your trucks start before dawn and are parked by afternoon, that is when maintenance should happen. Alafaya is a long drive from the Brooksville shop, so the plan sends a technician to your yard instead, on a day and at an hour built around your routes. Each visit is grouped to cover several units, and you send the list and any driver complaints ahead so the parts arrive with the technician. A truck that came back from its route with a new noise can go to the top of that list.
The landfill liner work and Alafaya dump trucks
The liner project keeps heavy work going on site through October 2028. If your dump trucks, equipment haulers or service trucks are part of a long project like that, an RDI Fleet plan can time heavier service between phases and keep routine PM on site. Equipment trailers hauling machines in and out of a site like that can be checked on the same visit as their trucks: brakes, lights, wiring and tires. See our construction page for the vocational trucks we work on.
Setting up an Alafaya hauler plan
Start with a call: how many trucks, what bodies they carry, how many routes and how early they leave. A technician then inventories the fleet at your yard, recording VIN, engine, hours, miles and condition, and noting which trucks have open problems. Intervals are set by engine hours where the work is stop-and-go and by miles where it is not. The first scheduled visit tackles the flagged trucks before anything else. The same account can carry the pickups supervisors drive, a parts or service truck and any trailers, each on a schedule of its own.
Any of your trucks that operate interstate with a gross vehicle weight rating of at least 10,001 pounds need a federal annual inspection, with the report kept 14 months. Booking each annual onto a scheduled PM visit keeps those dates from sneaking up, and the daily pre-trip stays with your drivers.
Records, warranty and roadside for Alafaya haulers
Each truck serviced gets its own photo report, with the technician’s notes on every finding, and those reports pile up into a record per unit. Over a year, the record shows which trucks keep coming back for the same problem and which are close to replacement, so the next budget is built on evidence.
When a hauler fails anyway, it jumps our queue. The repair is warrantied for 24,000 miles or 2 years under RDI Fleet, and a truck that refuses to start at 3:45 on a dark morning is covered by round-the-clock roadside help for fleet accounts. Lift work, from an in-frame engine job to a transmission rebuild, comes to our Brooksville bays on a date we set together, so a planned repair never collides with a heavy route day.
A complete rundown of the program lives on the RDI Fleet maintenance page. For breakdowns, see mobile diesel repair in Alafaya, and fleets based near the SR-408 and SR-417 interchange can compare fleet maintenance in Union Park. Talk through your trucks with us at (352) 433-3800.
