Until the 1970s, Northdale was 1,300 acres of Ragg family dairy and, later, cattle ranch. Today it is a suburb bounded by North Dale Mabry and the Veterans Expressway, and the diesels that keep it running work in short stops rather than long hauls. RDI Fleet, the fleet maintenance program of RDI Power, is built for that kind of duty: a written plan, preventive maintenance at your yard on a set schedule, and photo records for every unit. Technicians come out from our Brooksville shop, and visits are planned around when your trucks are parked.
The stop-and-go reality of Northdale routes
Across unincorporated Hillsborough County, curbside residential and commercial collection is contracted to private companies, and the county school system ran 943 bus routes as of 2016. If your own trucks run routes like those around Northdale, they spend more of the day braking and idling than cruising.
That duty cycle is hard on specific systems, and a good plan watches them closely:
- Brakes. A route made of constant stops wears linings and drums far faster than highway miles. We measure lining thickness and check adjustment on air brake trucks at every visit, so replacement is planned before it becomes an out-of-service violation.
- Exhaust aftertreatment. Low speeds and long idle periods keep exhaust temperatures down, which makes it harder for a diesel particulate filter to burn off soot passively. We review regen history and soot load during PM. Our article on DPF and regen problems covers what happens when that is ignored.
- Cooling. A truck creeping through Florida summer traffic with little airflow depends on its fan clutch, radiator and coolant condition. Those are checked on schedule.
- Starting and charging. Frequent restarts and accessory loads drain batteries and work starters and alternators hard.
Northdale buses, packers and pickups on one schedule
Mixed fleets are normal. A single plan can cover light duty pickups, medium duty box trucks, heavy vocational trucks and buses, with intervals set per class. Buses get extra attention to doors, interior electrical loads and brakes; our bus service and repair page covers that work. Heavy trucks with power takeoffs log PTO hours toward their service intervals instead of miles alone.
Annual inspections for units that need them land on the same calendar as their PM, so each vehicle is checked once for both. Drivers still do their own pre-trip checks; the plan does not replace that, it backs it up.
School-calendar timing for Northdale bus operators
Hillsborough’s public schools ran 943 bus routes in 2016, which says a lot about how much of the county’s week revolves around the school calendar. If your operation runs buses on that kind of schedule, whether for a private school, a church or a charter service, the best time for heavy work is when the buses are not needed. An RDI Fleet plan can be laid out that way:
- Summer break. Brake jobs, tire replacement, cooling system service and annual inspections for every bus, so each one starts the year with a clean report.
- Short breaks during the year. Catch-up repairs flagged on earlier visits.
- Weekday visits during the term. Routine PM booked for the hours between morning and afternoon runs, so no route is missed.
Trucks in the same Northdale fleet keep their own intervals alongside the buses, and the reports for every unit live in one place.
How the Northdale plan gets built
We start with an inventory: every unit’s VIN, engine, mileage or hours, condition and any open problems. Units with known issues go first. From there we set intervals, starting from the manufacturer’s schedule and tightening them where stop-and-go duty calls for it, and lay out a calendar of yard visits and inspection dates.
On visit days, technicians work through the list with scan tools and service equipment. Each truck gets a digital vehicle inspection with photos and notes, sorted into what needs action now and what can be planned for later. You approve repairs before they happen. A unit that needs a lift or a teardown, such as a transmission job, is scheduled into our Brooksville shop at a time you choose.
Northdale fleet warranty and around-the-clock help
Work done under an RDI Fleet account is covered by our 24,000-mile, 2-year fleet warranty, and fleet trucks move to the front of the line when something fails. Accounts also include roadside help 24/7, so a fleet truck that stalls on Dale Mabry before dawn is not waiting for the shop to open.
Northdale operators can read how the whole program works on RDI Fleet maintenance. For breakdown help without an account, see Northdale mobile diesel repair, and for the older neighborhoods just south, our Carrollwood fleet maintenance page applies the same planning to that area.
