The City of Tampa runs a Fleet Maintenance Division that serves more than 3,000 city vehicles from 2 facilities and processes over 15,000 repair orders a year. That is what keeping a large fleet running takes: a schedule, a record for every unit and people whose job is to stay ahead of failures. Most private fleets in Tampa have none of that in-house. RDI Fleet, RDI Power’s fleet program, gives them the same structure without the overhead: a written maintenance plan, preventive maintenance done at your yard by technicians who drive down from Brooksville, and a photo record of every visit.
Tampa’s freight economy and the trucks behind it
Tampa’s freight runs through a few big hubs. Port Tampa Bay lists about 33 million tons of cargo a year, from petroleum and aggregates to steel, fertilizer and containers, with CSX rail access and direct interstate access via I-4. CSX’s Uceta Rail Yard on the east side handles storage and intermodal freight. Tampa International Airport has FedEx Express and UPS cargo service. And on the waste side, the city’s Solid Waste Department collects 65% of the city’s commercial waste, with contracted private haulers handling the other 35%, and offers roll-off and compactor service.
If your fleet works any of those, from drayage tractors and bulk haulers to roll-off trucks and box trucks, it runs a duty cycle that standard maintenance schedules do not fit well.
Drayage and short-haul Tampa tractors
Port and rail drayage means short runs, long waits in terminal lines and a lot of idling. An engine in that service can log hours far faster than miles. An RDI Fleet plan for drayage tractors:
- Counts engine hours as well as miles, and services on whichever comes first.
- Watches aftertreatment closely. Idling and low-speed work keep exhaust temperatures down, which loads diesel particulate filters and leads to more regenerations, or to derates when they cannot finish. Our post on DPF and regen problems covers the symptoms.
- Checks air brakes every visit. Adjustment, lining thickness, chambers and air leaks, so a brake problem turns into a scheduled repair instead of a roadside one.
- Inspects tires closely. Terminal surfaces, curbs and tight turns are hard on tires.
- Includes the trailer or chassis where you own it: brakes, lights, wiring and tires on their own interval.
RDI works on Cummins, Detroit, Caterpillar and Volvo engines, and on Freightliner, Peterbilt, Kenworth, Mack, Volvo, International and Western Star tractors, so a mixed Tampa yard does not need a different shop for every make.
Tampa roll-off and refuse trucks
Roll-off and compactor trucks work hard in short distances. Their maintenance is set on engine hours with PTO time counted, and it focuses on brakes, suspension, cooling and leak checks on the engine, transmission and hydraulic lines. We work on the truck; anything found on the body is noted in the report so you can act on it.
DOT inspections on a Tampa calendar
A tractor that hauls freight across state lines, or any interstate commercial vehicle rated above 10,001 pounds GVWR, needs a federal annual inspection, and the paperwork stays on file for 14 months. That never replaces the driver’s own pre-trip walk-around each morning. What a Tampa plan does is line up every unit’s inspection due date with its scheduled PM, so the truck leaves service one time instead of two. Defects get photos and a written note, and nothing is fixed until you say so. The DOT inspections page lists what inspectors look at.
How Tampa yard visits and reporting work
On scheduled weekdays, a technician works through the units due at your yard with diagnostic tools and service equipment. RDI is Caterpillar certified, with ASE certified technicians and dealer-level software that includes Ford IDS and WiTECH, so pickups and Class 8 tractors are both diagnosed with the right tools. After each visit, every unit serviced has its own report with pictures, splitting must-fix items from things to plan for. A year of those reports is a service history you can budget against, show an auditor or use to decide when a unit should be replaced.
Major jobs, such as transmission rebuilds or internal engine repairs, are planned into our Brooksville shop on a date you choose. If your Tampa trucks need a bay, we work out the move with you so they are gone as briefly as possible.
Tampa warranty, priority and after-hours coverage
Fleet repairs on Tampa accounts are covered for 2 years or 24,000 miles. Fleet units jump the line when something breaks, and accounts include 24/7 roadside assistance for the truck that stalls on I-4 at night.
Each Tampa plan is a version of the RDI Fleet maintenance program. When a Tampa truck is stranded right now, go to Tampa mobile diesel repair, and for operations northeast of the city, see Temple Terrace fleet maintenance. Tampa operators can phone (352) 433-3800 with a rough list of units to begin.
