Palmetto’s truck traffic has little to do with its size. SeaPort Manatee’s North Gate sits at 1705 Piney Point Road with a Palmetto address, and the port moved a record 11,855,828 tons of cargo in fiscal 2025. A large share of that leaves by road, and the port itself points to the run down US 41 to I-75 and I-275, as little as 4 minutes, as one of its selling points. RDI Power has no shop in Palmetto. When a diesel stops here, a technician comes to it.
SeaPort Manatee freight on US 41 and Piney Point Road
The cargo explains the trucks. In fiscal 2025 the port handled a record 6,400,844 tons of liquid bulk, led by petroleum products and juices, along with 3,442,991 tons of dry bulk such as phosphate rock, granite and limestone, 793,128 tons of breakbulk and 133,456 TEUs of containers. Gasoline, fresh produce, lumber, plywood and aluminum cross the docks too, and Fresh Del Monte has operated a terminal there since 1989. Tankers, bulk and dump trailers, container chassis and refrigerated rigs all funnel onto the same roads, often fully loaded.
FDOT’s 2025 inventory counts about 4,888 trucks a day on US 41 near Palmetto, 10.4% of its traffic, and about 4,230 a day on US 41 Business between Manatee Avenue and Riverside Drive. US 301 adds roughly 3,332 and US 19 about 2,520.
Loaded port rigs and the repairs a technician finishes in Palmetto
A loaded tractor puts its air system, brakes, cooling and charging under steady strain, and those are the systems behind many of the calls we take. On site, the technician scans the truck and tests the system the codes point to before anything is replaced. Then come the repairs a service truck is equipped for: air line and fitting leaks, brake chambers and slack adjusters, batteries, cables, starters and alternators, belts and coolant hoses, fuel filters and water separators, and the sensor and wiring faults behind a derate.
The trailer side is frequently on-site work as well: lights, plugs, harnesses and the air connections between tractor and trailer. Our trailer repair page covers that work in more depth. Whatever gets fixed, it is documented in a digital inspection with photos and the technician’s notes.
Where I-275 begins: Exit 228 and the Skyway approach
I-275 starts at I-75 Exit 228 in rural Palmetto and carries traffic north over the Sunshine Skyway toward St. Petersburg. A truck that starts acting up on the way to the bridge has a better option than a narrow shoulder: FDOT lists the Manatee County rest area at the south end of the Skyway with truck parking. If the truck can be driven there safely, it gives the technician a level, protected place to work. If it cannot, get it as far off the lane as it will go, set out the warning devices and wait well away from traffic.
From a mobile unit to Palmetto’s port roads
RDI Power started as a mobile unit. Owner Ryan Bethell, who learned the trade in his father’s garage, served fleets from Brooksville to Tampa out of a service truck before the shop on Donto Way existed. That history is why mobile work is still how RDI reaches customers across Central Florida, Palmetto included. Technicians bring Ford IDS and WiTECH capability for Power Stroke and Ram pickups plus heavy duty scan tools for Class 8 tractors, and our ASE certified technicians work out of a Caterpillar certified operation.
Palmetto repairs that belong on a lift
Some port truck problems do not belong on a roadside. Internal engine failures, transmission removal and rebuilds, and jobs that need a lift or heavy tooling are done in Brooksville. When a Palmetto diagnosis lands there, we plan the move with you, timing and transport included, and the on-site findings go with the truck so nobody starts over. Work done on site and in the shop carries the same warranties: 3 years / 36,000 miles on labor, or 2 years / 24,000 miles for RDI Fleet accounts.
Reporting a Palmetto breakdown
Tell us whether the truck is inside or outside the port gate, which road it is on and in which direction, whether it is loaded and with what, and what happened before it stopped. Access inside the port is controlled by the port, so a truck that can be moved outside the gate is usually simpler to reach. RDI Fleet accounts have 24/7 roadside assistance at (352) 433-3800; other customers can call that number on weekdays from 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM.
Our mobile diesel repair page covers the full program. Planned upkeep for port trucks is explained on fleet maintenance in Palmetto, and the interchange community to the east has its own page for Ellenton mobile diesel repair.
