The trouble with a failing transmission and a 28-mile drive is that the transmission does not get better on the way. RDI Power diagnoses, repairs and rebuilds diesel truck transmissions at our Brooksville shop, about 28 road miles north of central Land O’ Lakes on US-41, and the first thing we will ask on the phone is whether the truck should make that trip at all.
A slipping transmission and 28 miles of US-41 from Land O’ Lakes
Slipping produces heat, and heat destroys automatic transmission fluid and clutch material together. A unit that needed a solenoid or a sensor this morning can need a full rebuild after 45 minutes of flaring shifts under load. If the fluid smells burnt, the truck has dropped into limp mode or the slip is getting worse, call (352) 433-3800 before you drive. A mobile technician can scan the truck where it sits, read stored codes and check fluid condition, and if the unit has to come out, the tow up US-41 is planned with the diagnosis already in hand.
Converter heat in Land O’ Lakes traffic and on the trailer
A transmission works hardest at low speed under load. In the kind of traffic that makes SR-54 and US-41 1 of Pasco’s busiest intersections, the torque converter spends more time unlocked, and an unlocked converter turns engine power into fluid heat. Add a loaded trailer and a Florida afternoon and fluid temperature climbs quickly. A clean, flowing auxiliary cooler, fluid changed on the severe service schedule and a temperature reading the driver actually checks are cheap insurance against the expensive outcome.
Transmissions we repair for Land O’ Lakes trucks
On Ford Super Duty trucks that means the 4R100 behind the 7.3L, the 5R110W TorqShift of the 6.0L and 6.4L years, the 6R140 and the current 10R140; our write-up on 5R110W problems covers the middle generation. Ram trucks bring the 47RE and 48RE behind the 5.9L Cummins, the 68RFE behind the 6.7L and the Aisin in heavier models. GM Duramax trucks use the Allison 1000 through 2019 and the Allison 10-speed after that, and medium duty trucks, buses and diesel pushers carry larger Allison automatics. Manual gearboxes are on the list too, from the G56, NV5600 and ZF 6-speeds in older pickups to the 10-, 13- and 18-speed units in heavy trucks, along with their clutches.
Electrical first, then mechanical, for Land O’ Lakes shift complaints
Plenty of shift complaints have nothing to do with the hard parts. So the order never changes: a scan with Ford IDS, WiTECH or a heavy duty tool to see commanded and actual gear, converter slip and solenoid status; a fluid check at the specified temperature, with a look at what is on the filter and the pan magnet; a road test under the conditions that cause the complaint; and pinpoint tests on solenoid and sensor circuits. Only then does anyone talk about pulling the unit.
Repair, rebuild or replace for a Land O’ Lakes truck
The evidence decides. External faults get repaired without opening the case. Internal damage means a teardown and rebuild, with the cooler and lines flushed or the cooler replaced so old debris does not ruin new parts. When the case or major hard parts are damaged, a replacement unit may be the better spend. You see the photos from the digital inspection either way, and our labor is backed for 3 years or 36,000 miles, or 2 years and 24,000 miles on RDI Fleet units.
The truck transmission repair and rebuild page covers the process in depth. If the engine is acting up too, our Land O’ Lakes truck repair page is the place to start, and owners a few miles north can turn to Connerton transmission repair.
