Every diesel built in the last 25 years runs on computers, and most carry several of them. Plugging in a scan tool takes a minute. Knowing what the data means, which test to run next and when a code is pointing in the wrong direction takes experience and the right software. RDI Power runs computer diagnostics in Brooksville and on site at fleet yards across Central Florida.
What a scan tool can and cannot tell you
A trouble code tells you which circuit or system the computer thinks is out of range. It does not tell you why. A low rail pressure code can come from a clogged filter, a weak lift pump, a leaking injector or a failing pump. A NOx sensor code can be the sensor, the wiring or an SCR system that really is not converting. The code narrows the search; testing finishes it.
Our diagnostic tools
- Ford IDS: Ford’s dealer-level software for Power Stroke trucks and vans, in the hands of a team that includes 30+ years of Ford dealership experience.
- WiTECH: the Stellantis dealer platform for Ram and Dodge trucks, including module programming and access through the secure gateway on newer Rams.
- Heavy-duty diagnostic tools: for the engine, aftertreatment, transmission, ABS and body modules on the J1939 network of medium and heavy trucks.
- Meters, scopes and pressure gauges: because the computer only knows what its sensors tell it.
Beyond codes: tests and programming
Diagnostic software lets us command the truck to do things it will not do on its own:
- Cylinder contribution and injector balance tests
- Forced DPF regeneration and DEF doser quantity tests
- Turbo actuator and EGR valve sweeps
- Injector trim code programming after injector replacement on many common rail engines
- Module flashing with factory updates, and setup after a module is replaced
How we run a diagnosis
- Listen. When did it start, what was the truck doing, has anything been replaced?
- Scan everything. Every module, not just the engine. Fault history and freeze frame data show the conditions when the fault set.
- Watch live data. On a road test or in the bay, under the conditions that cause the problem.
- Test the suspect. Pressure, voltage, resistance, signal shape or a guided test confirms the failed part.
- Find the root cause. If a component failed because of something else, that gets fixed too.
Where diagnostics come in
Most repairs start here: check engine lights, derates, regens that will not finish, intermittent electrical faults and shifting complaints. Wiring problems flow into our electrical repair work. Platform-specific detail is on our Ford and Ram and Dodge pages.
What you receive
Every diagnosis ends with a digital inspection: the codes, the test results that matter, photos of what we found and a technician’s plain-language notes. You approve repairs knowing what failed and why. Fleet managers get the same report for every unit.
Have the codes or the dash message ready when you call. If the truck cannot move, a mobile technician can bring the tools to it.
