Ruskin is a crossroads town. US 41 runs through its center as a four-lane road, 10 miles north to Gibsonton and 20 miles southwest to Bradenton. I-75 runs along its eastern edge, with exit 240 at SR 674, College Avenue. And SR 674 itself begins here, at US 41 near Port Manatee, and heads about 25.5 miles east through Sun City Center, Wimauma and Fort Lonesome into Polk County. Add one of Florida’s big e-commerce warehouses and a long farming history, and plenty of diesels pass through. RDI Power has no shop in Ruskin; when a truck stops here, a technician comes out from our Brooksville shop to fix it on site.
The I-75 rest areas beside Ruskin
FDOT lists two I-75 rest areas within a couple of miles of Ruskin: a southbound one with 117 truck parking spaces and a northbound one with 60. A driver who pulls in to rest can come back to a truck that will not restart. A sleeper cab that ran its electrical load overnight can drain the batteries; a starter that was weak yesterday can quit this morning; a slow air leak can leave the tanks empty after a long stop.
Call with the direction you were traveling, where in the lot you are parked and what the truck does when you try it. If the rest area’s rules do not allow repair work, we will help you find a safe place nearby. Our batteries page explains how we test starting systems before replacing anything.
SR 674, College Avenue, from US 41 to Polk County
SR 674 carries about 43,000 vehicles a day near Ruskin, roughly 3,956 of them trucks, 9.2% of the total. It is the main link between US 41 near Port Manatee, I-75 at exit 240 and the communities to the east. A breakdown on College Avenue is best handled from a parking lot or side street, not the travel lane. When you call, tell us whether you are east or west of the interstate, which direction you were heading and the nearest cross street.
Farther east toward Wimauma and Fort Lonesome, a mile marker, a farm gate or the last intersection you passed helps the technician find you.
Delivery traffic near Ruskin’s fulfillment center
Amazon announced its Ruskin fulfillment center in 2013. The warehouse is larger than one million square feet, received its first item in September 2014, and a 2016 report described items being picked, packed and sorted by conveyor into delivery trucks for most Florida orders, with 2,500 workers on site. If your truck runs freight into or out of a facility like that, a missed dock window ripples down the line. A technician can come to the truck in a yard or lot where the property allows the work and handle charging faults, air leaks, fuel restrictions and sensor problems on the spot.
Ruskin farm trucks: tomatoes, flowers and tropical fish
Ruskin’s soils suited tomatoes, and the Ruskin Tomato Festival, started in 1935, still runs every May. Tomato acreage declined from the 1990s as housing replaced many plantations, but by the 1980s flower farms, phosphate and tropical fish farms had become important to the local economy, and the UF/IFAS Tropical Aquaculture Laboratory sits on 24th Street SE. If your truck works a farm here, a technician can come to it. Tell us the gate, the access route and whether the ground will hold a service truck.
South Hillsborough landmarks in Ruskin
Off the main roads, a few public landmarks make a truck easy to find. Ruskin is home to the county’s SouthShore Regional Service Center and the South Hillsborough County Government Center, and the UF/IFAS Tropical Aquaculture Laboratory sits at 1408 24th Street SE. On US 41, the nearest cross street or a business sign does the job. If you are not sure exactly where you are, describe the last turn you made and what you can see, and we will work it out together on the phone.
Repairs that never leave Ruskin
After a proper diagnosis with dealer-level software, the usual on-site repairs include batteries and starters, alternators and belts, coolant hoses, fuel filters and water separators, sensors and wiring, and air lines, gladhands and brake chambers on heavy trucks. Every repair in Ruskin is documented on a digital inspection with photos, and the labor carries RDI Power’s warranty of 3 years or 36,000 miles.
Bigger Ruskin jobs and the Brooksville bays
Internal engine failures, transmission work and anything requiring a lift belong in our Brooksville bays. The technician explains what failed and why, and we plan the trip up from Ruskin with you.
