Whether it is a Super Duty with a gooseneck hitch, a Ram 3500 hauling a work trailer, a Duramax pickup, a Titan XD or a Sprinter van, a diesel from Pasadena Hills gets the same treatment at RDI Power: test first, then repair. Our shop is on Donto Way in Brooksville, about 32 road miles from the middle of Pasadena Hills, so every call starts with deciding whether the truck should make that trip at all.
Pickups on the new SR 52 out of Pasadena Hills
The 2023 SR 52 realignment changed how Pasadena Hills gets to the interstate. A pickup heading for I-75 now runs a divided highway with signals at Prospect Road, Curley Road and Mirada Boulevard before it reaches Exit 285. That pattern mixes stop-and-go at the lights with long, steady stretches, and a diesel feels both. The signals add heat cycles and idle time. The highway adds the miles that wear injectors, fuel pumps and turbochargers, more so with a trailer on the hitch.
Trucks that stay close to home have the opposite problem. Quick trips between the house, the store and a nearby job site never keep the exhaust hot long enough for the particulate filter to finish a regeneration. Soot collects in the filter and the EGR system until the truck tries to regenerate every few days or puts a clogged filter warning on the dash.
Known weak spots we test on Pasadena Hills diesel pickups
Every platform has a history, and the history tells us where to begin:
- 6.4 Power Stroke. Leaking radiators and EGR coolers, plus engine oil thinned by fuel on trucks that regenerate a lot.
- 6.7 Power Stroke and LML Duramax. The CP4.2 injection pump can fail internally and shed metal into the fuel system, so a failed pump means checking injectors, rails and lines too.
- LB7 Duramax. Injectors that leak, first noticed as smoke or a rising oil level.
- 5.9 Cummins with the VP44 pump. Injection pump failures, frequently traced to a lift pump that quit feeding it.
- 6.7 Cummins. Turbo actuator faults and EGR or DPF trouble that ends in a derate.
History narrows the search. It never replaces testing the truck in the bay. Engine-by-engine detail is on our light duty diesel repair page.
Handcart Road to I-75 Exit 285: planning the Pasadena Hills trip to Donto Way
The usual route heads out Handcart Road and Curley Road to Mirada Boulevard, west on SR 52 to Exit 285, north on I-75 and then over county roads into Brooksville, about 48 minutes in light traffic. A truck with a steady warning light that otherwise drives normally can usually make it. A truck that is overheating, smells of coolant, shows a rising oil level or has dropped into reduced power should not. A mobile technician can scan it at a yard, a job site or the roadside instead; the Pasadena Hills mobile diesel repair page explains how.
Once it reaches the shop, a Ford gets plugged into Ford IDS and a Ram into WiTECH, the same platforms the dealers run. Ford owners also get a specialist who put in more than 30 years at a Ford dealership, and the service advisor who writes up the repair order spent 35 years as a Chevrolet dealership technician. The digital inspection that comes with every job puts photos of the findings in your hands before you approve anything. Pickup repairs are backed by a 3-year, 36,000-mile labor warranty, and active military, veterans, police and fire receive 10% off. If your work takes you south toward the interstate exits, see truck repair in Wesley Chapel.
Call (352) 433-3800 with the truck’s year, engine and symptom before you start the drive.
