Lakeland’s economy is built on moving goods. Publix keeps its headquarters here along with one of its 10 distribution centers and a bakery, a dairy plant, a deli kitchen, a fresh kitchen and a printing operation. Wikipedia describes the city as a transportation hub where FedEx Freight, FedEx Services and Saddle Creek together employ more than 600 people. In a city like that, a truck that misses its slot costs real money, and the cheapest breakdown is the one that never happens. RDI Fleet, the fleet program run by RDI Power, exists to plan maintenance before it turns into a roadside call.
How RDI Fleet works without a Lakeland shop
We do not have a shop or an office in Lakeland. RDI Fleet plans here are built around yard visits: technicians come out from our Brooksville shop on a schedule set around your operation, work through the units that are due, and leave a digital inspection behind for each one. When a truck needs a lift, a teardown or a transmission rebuild, we plan its trip to the Brooksville bays with you and time it for a stretch when the truck can be spared.
A yard visit goes best with a few basics in place: a paved or hard-packed area beside each unit for the service truck, keys and gate access, and a contact who knows the trucks. Drivers’ notes about leaks, noises and warning lights are worth collecting ahead of time. In a big Lakeland distribution yard, a list of trailer numbers and parking rows saves the technician from hunting.
Fitting PM around Lakeland distribution schedules
A plan starts with how your trucks actually work, so the opening conversation covers:
- Shifts and dock times. When units sit idle long enough for service, whether that is a midday gap, an overnight park or a weekend.
- Duty cycle. A tractor running I-4 toward Tampa piles up highway miles, while a box truck making short city deliveries spends its life starting, stopping and idling. Those 2 trucks should not share a PM interval.
- Mix. Pickups, box trucks, tractors, trailers and buses can sit on a single plan, with intervals set by class.
- Budget. What breakdowns cost you now, and what you would rather put into prevention.
From there, preventive maintenance goes on a shared calendar by miles, engine hours or date, whichever suits each unit. Lakeland fleet accounts also move to the front of the line when something unplanned breaks.
Trailers parked at Lakeland docks
A trailer has no engine to complain when something is wrong, which makes it easy to forget until a brake drags or a light circuit dies at the gate. On an RDI Fleet plan, brakes, lights, tires, wiring and suspension get checked on their own schedule, timed with a tractor’s visit where the pair runs together. Our trailer repair page explains the repair side of that work for Lakeland yards.
Inspection records for Lakeland units
Annual DOT inspections sit on the same calendar as PM, so a unit is pulled once for both instead of twice. Drivers still own the daily pre-trip; the plan takes care of the annual. Every visit, PM or repair, ends with a digital vehicle inspection: photos of what the technician found, plain notes and a record of the work. Gathered over a year, those reports become each unit’s service history and take the guessing out of repair-or-replace decisions. Our DOT inspections page covers what the annual inspection includes for Lakeland units.
Lakeland’s other fleets on the road
Freight is not the only thing moving here. CSX’s Winston Yard, about 4 miles west of the city, is the railroad’s main classification yard for much of Central Florida. City of Lakeland operations employ 2,297 people on the county’s January 2026 list, and the city-owned utility, Lakeland Electric, runs the McIntosh and Larsen Memorial power plants. Citrus Connection, run by the Lakeland Area Mass Transit District, operates 33 fixed-route buses and 15 paratransit buses from terminals in downtown Lakeland and Winter Haven. Whatever your yard holds, RDI Fleet covers light, medium and heavy duty diesels, buses and trailers.
Fleet warranty and roadside for Lakeland accounts
Repairs performed under an RDI Fleet account are backed by a 2-year / 24,000-mile fleet warranty. Fleet customers also get 24/7 roadside assistance, so a unit that drops out on the Polk Parkway in the middle of the night is still covered. That coverage is the backstop for the plan, not a substitute for it.
The full program, from the first walk-around to the inspection reports, is described on RDI Fleet maintenance. If a Lakeland truck is down right now, our Lakeland mobile diesel repair page covers breakdown calls, and operators who also run units east of town can see how planning works on fleet maintenance in Winter Haven. Call (352) 433-3800 with a unit list, or without one; building the list is part of the first visit.
