Nissan sold the Titan XD with a 5.0L Cummins V8 diesel for the 2016 to 2019 model years. Not many were built, and plenty of general repair shops rarely see the diesel version. RDI Power is a diesel shop in Brooksville, and we approach a Titan XD the way we approach any modern Cummins: find the root cause, then fix it once.
What is under the hood
- 5.0L Cummins V8: built by Cummins specifically for this truck, with a Holset 2-stage turbocharger system.
- Full emissions package: EGR, a diesel oxidation catalyst, a DPF and SCR dosed with DEF.
- Aisin 6-speed automatic: a heavy-duty transmission matched to the diesel.
- XD chassis: a heavier frame than the standard Titan, built for towing and payload.
Why Titan XD owners end up at a diesel shop
A low-volume engine means fewer technicians who have seen inside it and less shared repair history to lean on. That makes careful diagnosis more important, not less. Instead of matching a code to a part, we treat the truck like any emissions-era diesel: confirm what the code really means with live data, test the suspect component, and look at what may have caused it to fail. Many of the systems on the 5.0, from its common rail fuel system to its SCR, follow the same principles as the Cummins engines in our Cummins service work.
What we check when a Titan XD comes in
Aftertreatment
DEF quality and level, doser operation, NOx sensor readings before and after the SCR catalyst, DPF soot load and regen history. A Titan XD used mostly for short trips may interrupt regens again and again, and soot loads climb until the truck complains. Our exhaust and DPF page explains the system.
Air and boost
The 2-stage turbo system depends on tight charge air plumbing. A loose clamp or split boot shows up as low power, black smoke or boost codes. A charge air pressure test finds the leak, and a scan shows how both turbo stages respond; see turbocharger repair.
Fuel supply
Fuel filter condition and the water-in-fuel separator. Water is hard on any common rail system, and Florida humidity and questionable fuel stops put it there.
Cooling under tow
Towing in summer heat pushes the radiator, charge air cooler and transmission cooler hardest. Debris packed between the coolers and tired coolant are easy to find and cheap to fix.
Transmission
Fluid condition and temperature history on the Aisin 6-speed, plus shift quality on a road test.
Towing with a Titan XD
The XD was built to tow, and towing is where small problems show up first. Before a long trip with a camper or equipment trailer, we check the cooling stack, transmission fluid, brakes, tires and the hitch and trailer wiring. A properly set trailer brake controller takes load off the truck’s own brakes in stop-and-go Florida traffic.
Diagnostics and maintenance
Old service records often show the truck was only ever scanned for codes. We read the engine, transmission and emissions modules, check for any software updates, and record live data during a road test. Every visit comes with a digital inspection, photos included, so you can see what we found. For routine work, our preventive maintenance service follows Nissan’s schedule with the severe-duty intervals that suit towing and heat.
When your Titan XD should come in
- A DEF warning, a DPF message or a derate
- Low power or black smoke under load
- Rough running, long cranking or a misfire
- Transmission shifts that flare or feel harsh
- A maintenance interval coming due, especially fuel filters
Owners in Brooksville and across Hernando, Pasco and Citrus counties can book a diagnosis or service visit; tell us the mileage and what the truck is doing, and we will take it from there.
