A transmission that has started slipping is a countdown, and the distance to the shop matters. From central Dade City, RDI Power’s Brooksville bays are about 27 road miles and 40 minutes away. That is an easy trip for a transmission with a mild complaint and a risky one for a unit that is overheating or burning its clutches. This page covers how to tell the difference, which transmissions we repair and rebuild, and how we diagnose them before quoting anything.
A slipping transmission and the 27 miles from Dade City
Before you set out, check 3 things:
- The fluid. If your truck has a dipstick, check the level with the engine running and the fluid warm, following the procedure for your transmission. Dark brown fluid, a burnt smell or visible particles mean internal damage is already under way.
- The behavior. A slight flare on one shift is different from a transmission that revs without pulling, drops out of gear or bangs into it.
- The warnings. A transmission temperature warning, a limp-mode message or a flashing light means stop driving.
Mild symptoms with good fluid: book a slot and drive it in. Anything worse: call (352) 433-3800, and we will help you choose between a tow and a mobile diagnosis at your yard, farm or job site.
Heat, hills and loaded trailers around Dade City
The city’s motto calls it “In The Hills of Pasco County,” and climbing with a trailer is where an automatic transmission builds heat. Pulling hard at low speed keeps the converter clutch released, and the fluid churning inside the converter is where much of that heat comes from. Heat breaks down fluid, glazes clutch packs and hardens seals. Practical defenses: keep the transmission cooler clean and flowing, service the fluid at sensible intervals for how you tow, use tow/haul mode, and watch the transmission temperature gauge on long pulls. A truck that runs hotter on the same trailer and route than it used to is giving you an early warning.
Ford, Ram, GM and Allison units from Dade City
| Make | Transmission | Behind |
|---|---|---|
| Ford | 10R140 10-speed | Current Super Duty diesels |
| Ford | 6R140 6-speed | 2011 to 2019 Super Duty |
| Ford | 5R110W TorqShift | 6.0 and 6.4 Power Stroke |
| Ford | 4R100 | 7.3 Power Stroke |
| Ram | 68RFE and Aisin | Cummins pickups and chassis cabs |
| GM | Allison | Duramax pickups |
| Medium duty | Allison automatics | Chassis cabs, buses, diesel pushers |
Knowing a unit’s weak points tells us where to look first; it never replaces testing the one in your truck. Our post on 5R110W transmission repair goes deep on the TorqShift, a common unit in older Super Duty trucks.
What the fluid and the scan tool show on a Dade City truck
A real diagnosis has 4 parts. First the fluid: what is on the pan magnet and in the filter separates normal wear from a failing clutch pack or a broken hard part. Next the data: Ford IDS on Ford trucks and WiTECH on Ram show which gear the module wants against the gear it is getting, how much the converter is slipping, what each solenoid is doing and which codes are stored. Then a drive with the laptop still plugged in, to catch the complaint as it happens. Last, everything bolted to the outside of the case, from cooler and lines to connectors and software level. A transmission cooked by a clogged cooler is only waiting to be cooked again if that cooler is reused.
Rebuild or repair for a Dade City transmission
Plenty of shift complaints end without a teardown, with a new speed sensor, a cooler line, a solenoid pack or reprogrammed software. If the clutches are burned or the hard parts are worn, a rebuild strips the unit to the case, and every friction, seal and worn component is renewed before it goes back together. If the case itself is cracked or the damage runs through the geartrain, we will tell you a replacement unit is the better buy. Either way the photos in your digital inspection show what we saw, and transmission labor is warrantied for 3 years or 36,000 miles.
Each step is described in more depth on our truck transmission repair and rebuild page. Engine trouble often travels with transmission trouble on trucks that tow, which our Dade City truck repair page covers, and drivers farther south can read about transmission repair in Wesley Chapel.
