Small horse farms line Mondon Hill Road on its way into Hill ’n Dale, and I-75 waits 3.5 miles east of the community. Between those 2, a diesel pickup in Hill ’n Dale can pull a trailer on a county road in the morning and run the interstate in the afternoon. RDI Power repairs Ford Super Duty, Ram, Chevrolet and GMC heavy-duty pickups, chassis cabs, the Nissan Titan XD and Sprinter vans at our shop on Donto Way, about 10 road miles west.
Towing on Mondon Hill Road and I-75
Trailer weight changes the maintenance list, and so does the interstate. Exit 301 was rebuilt as a single point interchange, with part of Cortez Boulevard widened to 6 lanes, in a project finished in fall 2019, so the on-ramp is where a loaded pickup first asks for full power. If your truck pulls a horse trailer, a gooseneck or a flatbed, these parts deserve attention sooner than the dashboard reminder suggests:
- Brakes and wheel bearings. Stopping a loaded trailer on a county road loads the truck’s brakes harder than the trailer brakes alone can cover, and hubs heat up with them.
- Transmission fluid. Heat is what kills an automatic. A truck that tows on I-75 in July should have its fluid serviced on the severe schedule and its cooler kept clean.
- Cooling system. A radiator packed with dust from unpaved lanes, or a weak fan clutch, shows up as a temperature gauge that climbs only with a trailer on.
- The connection. Trailer plugs and wiring corrode, and a bad ground can make trailer brakes act up or lights flicker.
Pickup symptoms worth a call from Hill ’n Dale
- Long cranking on a cool morning. Power Stroke and Duramax engines use glow plugs, newer ones included, while Cummins pickups use an intake heater. Weak batteries cause the same complaint, so both get tested.
- Regens every few days. Short runs to Brooksville and back may never let the particulate filter finish cleaning. A filter that keeps loading usually has a cause upstream worth finding.
- Black smoke or lost power under tow. A boost leak, a sticking turbo vane or an injector problem. Each has a test.
- Metal in the fuel filter. On trucks with the Bosch CP4.2 high-pressure pump, a pump failure can contaminate the whole fuel system, so the inspection goes beyond the pump itself.
Dealer software for Hill ’n Dale Fords, Rams and GMs
Ford trucks get connected to Ford IDS, and Ram trucks to WiTECH, the same factory-level software a dealership runs. That gives our technicians module data and test routines without a dealership appointment. The Ford specialist here has more than 30 years of Ford dealership work behind him. After the repair, the digital inspection lands in your inbox with photos and notes on what we found, and the labor is warranted for 3 years or 36,000 miles. Our light duty diesel repair page covers each engine in more depth, and our trailer repair page covers what happens behind the hitch.
Getting a sick pickup from Hill ’n Dale to Donto Way
The route is easy: Cortez Boulevard west, about 17 minutes. Whether to drive it depends on the symptom. A steady check engine light on a truck that runs normally can usually make the trip. A derate, a flashing light, overheating or low oil pressure should not. Unhitch the trailer if you can, get the truck somewhere safe, and call. If it will not start or move, a technician can come to it; our Hill ’n Dale diesel repair page explains how we decide between the bay and the service truck.
Pickups based farther east along SR 50 have a page of their own: Ridge Manor truck repair.
