Ask what wears on a diesel pickup in Moon Lake and the main road is part of the answer. Moon Lake Road (CR 587) is a divided 4-lane road only for its first stretch south of SR 52, and below that it narrows to 2 lanes. In 2024 developer turn-lane work there had drivers waiting through alternating traffic, and the county’s widening is not slated for funding until 2028. RDI Power repairs diesel pickups, chassis cabs and vans at our Brooksville shop, about 27 road miles from the middle of Moon Lake, and this page covers what that driving does to a truck and how to get it to us.
Stop-and-wait traffic on Moon Lake Road and a diesel pickup
A diesel engine is happiest working. Long idles and slow crawls through a work zone do the opposite of what its emissions hardware needs:
- Soot builds up. The particulate filter burns off soot only when the exhaust stays hot for a while. Idling never gets it there, so regens start, stall and start again, and fuel economy drops along the way. An occasional steady run on SR 52 or the Parkway helps, but a truck that regenerates constantly needs a diagnosis.
- EGR parts clog. Valves and coolers in the exhaust gas recirculation system collect soot faster at low load, which can trigger codes, rough running and derates.
- Heat collects. At a standstill, the radiator and transmission cooler get little airflow. A weak fan clutch or a partly plugged cooler shows up as temperature creep in traffic, not on the highway.
- Injectors show their age. A dribbling injector smokes and knocks most at idle; our article on why diesel fuel injectors fail explains the usual causes.
Drive it 27 miles or call: a Moon Lake checklist
Our shop is a little under 40 minutes away by SR 52, the Parkway and SR-50, so sort the problem before you start the engine.
Fine to drive in: a steady check engine light on a truck that runs, idles and shifts normally; a small oil or coolant seep with gauges where they belong; a regen warning on a truck that still has full power.
Call first: a flashing check engine light, a derate, a temperature gauge moving up, an oil pressure warning, new knocking or heavy smoke. Any of these can grow into an engine failure over 27 miles.
Ask for a technician: a truck at a yard, job site or roadside that will not start or should not move. Mobile technicians bring scan tools, and some no-starts are settled where the truck sits.
Ford, Ram, GM and Titan XD diagnostics for Moon Lake owners
Each platform has its own software and its own weak spots, and we treat them that way. Plug a Super Duty into Ford IDS or a Ram into WiTECH and the factory tests come up right in our Brooksville bay, no dealership appointment needed. Duramax pickups, the 5.0 Cummins V8 in the Nissan Titan XD and Sprinter vans round out the light-duty side. On the people side, decades at Chevrolet and Ford dealerships stand behind the diagnosis: our service advisor has 35 years as a Chevrolet technician, and our Ford specialist more than 30 years at a Ford dealership.
You approve repairs after seeing them. A digital vehicle inspection sends photos of the failed parts, plus anything else worth watching, along with the technician’s notes, and the labor is warranted for 3 years / 36,000 miles. The complete pickup scope is on the light duty diesel repair page, and our Moon Lake diesel repair page covers the community and the drive in more detail. Owners just south, along Ridge Road, can read our River Ridge truck repair page.
