Sugarmill Woods sits between 2 highways, and both carry heavy trucks. US-19/98 runs down the west side, carrying US-98 traffic that joins US-19 at Chassahowitzka, just to the southwest, on its way north toward Perry. The Suncoast Parkway runs down the east side, with interchanges at US-98 and W. Cardinal Street on the 13-mile extension to SR-44. RDI Power works on the tractors and heavy straight trucks that use those roads, from Freightliner, Peterbilt and Kenworth to Mack, Volvo, International and Western Star, in our Brooksville bays about 17 road miles from the middle of Sugarmill Woods or on site where the truck stopped.
Highway tractors on US-19/98 past Sugarmill Woods
A tractor that spends its day at highway speed wears differently from one shuttling short loads. Steady miles keep exhaust temperatures up, so the particulate filter often stays cleaner, and the trouble shifts elsewhere:
- Aftertreatment sensors and dosing. NOx sensors, DEF dosers and SCR faults are common reasons for a derate on a highway truck, and a sensor reading wrong can look like a failed catalyst.
- Fuel and air. High-mileage injectors, turbo actuators and leaking charge air coolers show up as low power, smoke or poor fuel economy.
- Cooling. Fan clutches, radiators and coolant hoses work hard in Florida heat with a loaded trailer behind them.
- Wheel ends and air supply. Bearings, seals and the air dryer cartridge all have service lives, and an air dryer that stops working sends moisture and oil through the whole brake system.
The point is to test before replacing. An expensive aftertreatment part is the wrong purchase if an inexpensive sensor or a wiring fault set the code, and only the diagnosis tells the difference.
Following the US-98 truck route back to Brooksville
A tractor healthy enough to drive in uses the same route freight takes into Citrus County, only in reverse. Through trucks bound for US-98 north are signed around downtown Brooksville on Cortez Boulevard and Cobb Road, the US-98 truck route, and from Sugarmill Woods that means US-98 southeast to Cobb Road. Weigh stations sit just west of where Cobb Road meets US-98. If you already know about a brake, light or air problem, call before the trip: a mobile technician can often fix a leaking line, an out-of-adjustment brake or a dead marker light before the truck rolls.
Engine and electrical work for Sugarmill Woods tractors
Heavy engine work starts with knowing the engine. RDI Power holds Caterpillar certification, and older Cat engines such as the 3406 remain regular work when an owner prefers an overhaul to a replacement; our Caterpillar engine repair page covers that side. Cummins ISX and X15, Detroit Series 60 and DD engines, and the Volvo D13 make up much of the rest. On anything built in the last 20 years, the first hour tends to be electronic: reading fault history, comparing sensor values against each other and tracing harness damage. A rubbed-through wire along the frame rail or a green, corroded ground can make a healthy module look dead, and swapping modules on a hunch is an expensive way to learn that. When injectors or pumps really are worn out, we source Alliant Power parts and Bosch diesel components.
A disabled heavy truck near Sugarmill Woods
A 17-mile trip is a short drive and a long tow, so call before anything gets hooked up. Plenty of heavy-truck failures end with a service truck parked alongside: air leaks, electrical faults, plugged fuel filters, a failed sensor. When the repair really does need a lift or a teardown, we arrange the tow and have a bay planned so the work begins on arrival. Roadside help around the clock is part of an RDI Fleet account; independent operators reach us during weekday shop hours.
Before a tractor leaves the bays, it gets a digital inspection with photos and notes on the brakes, tires, suspension and anything else the technician saw, not only the repair on the work order. Trailers can come along, since we repair those too, and if the annual inspection is close, it can be done in the same visit through DOT inspections in Sugarmill Woods. The full heavy-duty scope is on our heavy-duty diesel truck repair page, and trucks working farther north on US-19 are covered by our Homosassa Springs semi truck repair page.
