Heavy-duty diesel pickups are built to work, and some of their problems come from not working enough. If your truck is parked inside a 1.1-square-mile gated community, driven a few miles at a time and taken on the highway now and then, it wears differently from a contractor’s rig. RDI Power repairs diesel pickups, vans and chassis cabs on Donto Way in Brooksville, around 19 road miles from central Heritage Pines, and that difference shapes where we look first.
Short hops inside Heritage Pines and what they do to a diesel
If your truck’s typical trip is a mile or 2 inside the gates, these are the systems that complain:
- The particulate filter. It burns off soot during regeneration, which needs sustained exhaust heat. Short runs start regens and then cut them off, so the filter loads, the truck tries again and again, and fuel economy drops. The pattern, and how to break it, is laid out in our DPF and regen problems article.
- Engine oil. On some engines, repeated regen attempts can thin the oil with fuel. An oil level that climbs between changes is worth mentioning when you call.
- The batteries. Diesel pickups run 2 of them, and both drift down while the truck sits. A weak pair cranks slowly and can set confusing electrical codes.
- Cold-start parts. Glow plugs do the job on Power Stroke and Duramax engines; the 6.7 Cummins heats its intake air with a grid heater instead. A failing one shows up as a long crank on the first cool morning of the year.
- Fuel. Diesel that sits can collect water, so the water separator deserves a drain at service time.
Towing reverses much of this. A pickup that pulls a trailer or a fifth wheel loads its cooling system, transmission and brakes far harder than daily driving, so any temperature creep, shift change or pull to one side under a load deserves a look before the next long trip.
Getting a Heritage Pines pickup to Brooksville by US-19 and SR-50
Out the County Line Road gate, west to US-19, north to SR-50 and east into Brooksville: about half an hour from the middle of the community. Whether to make that trip with a problem depends on the problem. If the only sign is a steady check engine light and the truck drives normally, bring it up US-19. A flashing light, a temperature gauge moving up, an oil pressure warning or a sudden loss of power means pull off where it is safe and call us. A few miles at the wrong moment can turn a sensor into an engine.
Ford IDS and WiTECH for trucks from Heritage Pines
Factory software matters on modern pickups. Ford IDS on a Super Duty and WiTECH on a Ram open up modules and factory tests that a parts-store code reader never sees. Duramax pickups, Titan XDs with the 5.0 Cummins and Sprinter vans get the same treatment. Behind the counter is a service advisor who worked 35 years as a technician at a Chevrolet dealership, and in the bays is a Ford specialist with 30-plus years at a Ford dealer, so the advice you get comes from people who have seen these trucks for decades.
Every truck comes back with a digital inspection that shows what failed and what is wearing, photographed and explained in the technician’s notes. Heritage Pines owners get the standard 3-year / 36,000-mile labor warranty. Everything we do on pickups is listed on the light duty diesel repair page; for the bigger picture of diesel service for the community, our Heritage Pines diesel repair page covers it. Pickups elsewhere in Hudson have their own page as well: truck repair in Hudson.
