2 major highways cross in Inverness: US-41, running north and south, and SR-44, which leads 15 miles east to I-75 near Wildwood and west toward Crystal River and the Suncoast Parkway. Tractors and heavy trucks that work those roads come to RDI Power’s heavy bays on Donto Way in Brooksville, about 24 road miles from the middle of Inverness, and our mobile technicians go out to the trucks that cannot come in.
Tractors on SR-44 between Inverness and I-75
East of town, SR-44 is the link between Inverness and the interstate. On any highway run, a heavy truck shows its problems under load: an engine that runs hot pulling up to speed, an air system that cannot keep up, or a derate that arrives after a long pull. If your truck stops on SR-44, the most useful facts for us are the direction, the nearest cross road and how far you are from Inverness or the interstate. A technician can then come out with diagnostic tools and on-site repair capability, and decide whether the repair happens on the shoulder or in the shop.
Heavy units and the Inverness Airport Business Park
Southeast of downtown, the county’s 80-acre business park at Inverness Airport entered Phase 2 construction in 2026, aimed at aviation manufacturing and logistics, with a 3,500-foot taxiway extension in the plan. If your dump trucks, lowboys or service trucks are working that build, plan for what construction duty does to them. Idling and short loaded runs are hard on aftertreatment: loaded particulate filters, sooted EGR valves and DEF faults are the usual result, and the fix starts with why the system failed, not with clearing the code.
Air, aftertreatment and engine work on Inverness heavy trucks
Heavy-truck work at our shop sorts into 6 families, and an Inverness rig with a problem usually lands in one of them.
Air. Slow build-up, short compressor cycles, a wet air dryer purge, or a hiss with the tanks full. We measure compressor output and governor cut-in and cut-out, track down the leak, and check every brake chamber’s pushrod travel.
Emissions hardware. On late-model Cummins, Detroit and Volvo engines, a derate often traces to the DPF, the DEF doser, a NOx sensor or the EGR valve. We find out what upstream fault damaged it before buying the part.
Heat. Packed radiators and charge air coolers, a fan clutch that will not lock up, or a tired water pump, most often noticed under load on a warm afternoon.
Engine internals. Injectors and pumps, using Alliant Power and Bosch diesel parts, plus turbochargers, head gaskets and complete overhauls. Being Caterpillar certified means older Cat power, including the 3406, stays in our bays; our write-up on common Caterpillar 3406 PEEC issues covers that engine.
Wiring. Charging and cranking circuits, harnesses rubbed through at the frame, and modules that lose contact on the data link.
Driveline. Clutches, driveshafts, U-joints and leaking gear oil seals.
Planning a 24-mile heavy tow out of Inverness
When a truck has to come to Brooksville, tell the tow company the make and model, whether a loaded trailer is attached and what it is carrying, and whether the driveshaft has to come out. A heavy wrecker for a coupled, loaded tractor is a different job from one for a bobtail. Phone us before the hookup, and the bay and a diagnostic plan will be waiting when the truck rolls in. The tow operator picks the road; the measured route from central Inverness runs by Pleasant Grove Road and Snow Memorial Highway, and US-41 is the other way south.
Each heavy truck leaves with a digital inspection that pictures the repair along with the state of its brakes, tires and suspension. If the annual is due, our Inverness DOT inspections page explains how we combine it with the repair visit. Repairs are backed by our labor warranty of 3 years or 36,000 miles. Everything we do on big trucks is listed on the semi and heavy-duty truck repair page, and trucks based down US-41 are covered on our Floral City semi truck repair page.
