Most of Shady Hills is acreage, pigeon lofts and quiet county roads. The west side is another matter: Hays Road leads to Pasco County’s waste-to-energy plant and landfill complex, a gas-fired power station sits on Merchant Energy Way, and the Suncoast Parkway crosses the community with an exit at County Line Road. RDI Power repairs Class 8 tractors and heavy straight trucks in our Brooksville bays, about 18 road miles from the middle of Shady Hills, and sends mobile technicians to heavy units that cannot make the trip.

Hauling into the Hays Road resource recovery complex

The West Pasco Resource Recovery Facility at 14230 Hays Road is rated at 1,050 tons a day and takes in about 340,000 tons of trash a year. The county complex around it adds a landfill, a 50-acre ash monofill and a landfill for construction and demolition debris. In 2023 Pasco approved a $260 million expansion that would lift the plant to 1,565 tons a day, with construction slated to begin the following year. Hays Road itself runs north from SR 52 toward the complex and the North Suncoast Industrial Park.

If your trucks run loads into that complex, they live a hard life. Short trips with a full body, long waits with the engine idling and constant stops put stress where highway miles do not:

  • Aftertreatment. Low exhaust temperatures leave the particulate filter loading faster than it can regenerate, and EGR valves and coolers collect soot along the way.
  • Air brakes. Every stop with a full load heats drums and linings and works the compressor and dryer. Slack adjuster stroke and chamber condition need regular checks.
  • Cooling. A heavy truck crawling at walking pace moves little air through the radiator, so a partly plugged core or a slipping fan clutch shows up as overheating.
  • Electrical. Lights, sensors and connectors take a beating from vibration and grime on site work.

A tractor stopped near Suncoast Parkway Exit 37

The Parkway’s Exit 37 at County Line Road serves both Shady Hills and Spring Hill, right on the county line, and the Spring Hill toll gantry stands inside Shady Hills at mile 32. On a limited-access toll road, a breakdown means a shoulder and fast traffic. Steer as far right as the truck allows, set the triangles and call (352) 433-3800 with your direction and the last Shady Hills exit or mile marker you passed.

East of the Parkway, SR 52 narrows from 6 lanes to 4 toward Fivay Junction and Shady Hills Road, so a stalled truck there takes up more of the road. Hays Road and Shady Hills Road make good reference points.

A mobile technician can settle many roadside failures, including air line leaks, a dead charging system, a failed sensor or a plugged fuel filter. When the truck needs a lift or a teardown, the technician’s diagnosis goes with it, and the tow runs north on the Parkway to Exit 46 and east on SR-50 to our bays. Fleet accounts have 24/7 roadside assistance. How on-site work goes is explained on our Shady Hills mobile diesel repair page.

Heavy bays in Brooksville for Shady Hills rigs

Engine overhauls, injector and turbo work, aftertreatment repairs and complete air brake jobs belong in the shop. Freightliner, Peterbilt, Kenworth, Mack, Volvo, International and Western Star trucks are all regular work, with Cummins, Detroit, Volvo and Caterpillar engines under the hood. RDI Power is Caterpillar certified, and older Caterpillar 3406 engines still come through our doors; our article on common 3406 PEEC engine issues covers that engine’s habits.

Every heavy unit leaves with a digital inspection showing its brakes, tires, suspension and leaks in photos, not only the repair it came in for. Shady Hills heavy units get RDI Power’s 3-year / 36,000-mile labor warranty, or the 2-year / 24,000-mile RDI Fleet warranty when the truck is on a fleet account.

Engines, brakes, electrical and aftertreatment for every heavy class are listed on our semi and heavy-duty truck repair page. Operators based on the other side of County Line Road can read our Spring Hill semi truck repair page, which covers the airport side of that community. Call the shop with the unit number and symptoms, and we will plan the visit with you.

I'm so happy with the service I received from RDI Power. I was told by another shop that I had a transmission leak in my diesel truck. Not only did the staff at RDI Power correctly diagnose my issue (which was not a leak), they were able to resolve the issue...

These guys are awesome, from Joe the service writer to the owners and all the folks in between. They communicated every step of the way and researched alternatives to my myriad of issues. Kudos all around.

Shady Hills questions

Our roll-off truck keeps derating on loaded runs into the Hays Road complex. Where do you start?
With a scan and the freeze-frame data from each derate, then direct tests of boost, fuel pressure and the aftertreatment sensors. A filter that never finishes a regen, a cracked charge pipe and a failing sensor can all cause the same derate, and each needs a different repair.
Can a mobile technician reach a tractor broken down near the Spring Hill toll gantry at mile 32 in Shady Hills?
For many roadside failures, yes: air leaks, electrical faults, sensors and fuel filter problems are often fixed on the shoulder. Tell us your direction of travel and the nearest mile marker, and if the truck needs a bay we plan the tow north to Brooksville.
What should we tell you when a heavy truck stops on SR 52 east of the Suncoast Parkway?
The direction you were headed, the nearest cross street such as Hays Road or Shady Hills Road, the make and engine, whether the truck is loaded, and what it did before it quit. That tells the technician which tools and parts to load.
